Critical Analysis Worksheet

Read “Common Core” and “The Battle Against Common Core Standards.”

Perform a critical analysis of each reading using critical thinking techniques from this week’s readings.

Respond to the following based on your critical thinking analysis of the “Common Core” and “The Battle Against Common Core Standards” readings.

1) Define the term conclusion.
The part of an argument you try to support is called the conclusion.

2) What is the conclusion of each article?
In “Common Core”, the conclusion is that Republicans are against Common Core and that Alabama should have their own set of standards based on the education system for the entire state without Federal interuptions.
In “The Battle Against Common Core Standards” the conclusion is not against the educational standards being raised at public schools. The problem is the loss of state control in making those standards.

3) Define the term premises.
The part that does the supporting is the premise.

4) What premises support the conclusions in each article?
Some republicans( many Tea Party organization) are against the Common Core and promise to vote against the bill.
In “The Battle Against Common Core Standards” “Putting a stop to implementation of the Common Core would preserve a measure of sovereignty for states to dictate their own, individualized requirements.

5) How convincing is the conclusion of each article? Explain your answer.
The article is not that convincing but the you can conclude that the Tea Party is against having the Common Core and that they will do what they have to put an end to it because they do not see the success from having it.
In “The Battle Against Common Core Standards” the conclusion is very convincing because its staright forward to the point and spelled out. Not a lot of muble jumble. The republicans clearly want to the states to dicate the school curriculum.

6) Define the term biases.
Its when you feel or show prejudices or are indifferent against someone or a group or something.

7) What biases did you observe in each article? Why do you think they are biases?
In the “Common Core” the Tea Party are biased against having the Common Core in the school system. They are against and will do what they can to get rid of it. I think they are bias against it because they want to have more local control over the curriculum.
In “The Battle Against Common Core Standards” the biases against the Obama administration adopting the initative of the Common Core.

8) What might be the sources of the biases in each article?
I see the over confidence effect within the “Common Core”. The Tea party wants to have some say or control within the school system curriculum process.
In “The Battle Against Common Core Standards” The republicans are against the democrats decision to adopt the Common Core.
