Amir And Hassan Rape Analysis
Mid-end of pg#289 “My body was broken—just how badly I wouldn’t find out until later—but I felt healed. Healed at last. I laughed.” This occurs when Amir is at Assef’s home, on the search for Sohrab. When then realizes that Assef has Sohrab, in order to win him over he had to fight Assef. Assef beats Amir with brass knuckles, causing Amir’s ribs to snap, cutting his slip and busting his jawline. Amir felt as if he deserved this, so he feels relieved. Amir believes he should have fought Assef years ago, to save Hassan from getting raped. Ever since the rape occurred Amir struggled with guilt upon himself and it worsened since he was never punished. Both Baba and Amir were guilty for something they had done in the past and there guilt always followed them everywhere. Baba was guilty for sleeping with Ali’s wife Sanubar and having Hassan. Amir was guilty for Hassan’s rape and for the way he always treated Hassan in their childhood. Both Amir and Baba had guilt that tortured them, it shows how they are both similar throughout the book. They both made mistakes that caused them to have lifelong guilt.

Baba slept with Ali’s wife Sanaubar, and had Hassan. Baba never told Amir or Hassan that they were half-brothers. Amir starts to see similarities between his father and him. Amir also feels that he is not the only one with guilt upon him. Baba also walked around with guilt. Amir’s betrayal of Hassan brings Amir and Baba closer in ways Amir would never predicted. Even though they have two different stories upon guilt, they both still share the secrecy of guilt.
Beginning of pg#19 “Because the truth of it was, I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all, I had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn’t I? The least I could have done was to have had the decency to have turned out a little more like him. But I hadn’t turned out like him.” In this quotation Amir thinks Baba doesn’t really like him because Amir is different from Baba they don’t share many of the same interests. Baba likes soccer and wrestling, while Amir like to write, and read. Baba is very courageous and on the other hand Amir is very sensitive. Amir thinks he needs to redeem himself because he blamed himself for killing his beautiful mother at birth and because he is nothing like his father. Amir feels that he needs to redeem himself for what he had done, and for not being like Baba. Baba never really bonded with Amir as they were so different. Baba also said there is only one sin

Amir’s father, Baba, sees the cowardice that Amir possesses and the constant need he has for his father’s approval. As the story progresses, Amir witnesses an act of evil in the aftermath of the kite running festival. He sees Hassan, his only friend, being raped by Assef, the town bully. Overwhelmed with horror and fear, Amir flees the scene, leaving his faithful friend behind. As a young boy, he seeks redemption for having abandoned his friend by seeking out physical pain as punishment. Amir narrates, “I hit him with another pomegranate, in the shoulder this time...‘Hit me back, goddamn you!’ I wished he would. I wished he'd give me the punishment I craved, so maybe I'd finally sleep at night. Maybe then things could return to how they used to be between us”(Hosseini, pg 92). Amir longs for forgiveness and to share the bond they once had. This incident serves as a lesson to Amir that redemption requires much more than encouraging Hassan to throw a pomegranate at his chest. While Hassan is a loyal friend, who might have recognized Amir’s attempt at redemption, Hassan refuses to participate. This failure at redemption leads to Amir distancing himself from Hassan, and the two continue to grow farther apart. The theme of redemption re-appears when Amir receives a phone call from his old friend, Rahim Khan. As Rahim finishes his conversation with Amir, he says, “Come. There is a way to be good again” (Hosseini, pg ). Without the prodding from Rahim, Amir may have never overcome the regret of his cowardly mistake. Even though he has grown and matured into adulthood, he realizes that his past is still a heavy burden. It is not until Amir returns to Afghanistan that he succeeds in finally securing atonement. After hearing the news of Hassan’s death and the fate of…

Baba is an idealistic character. Throughout the book he is descried to be this morally driven person, who sees the world in black and white. Amir states that “my father molded the world around him to his liking.”(15) This would show how Baba was seen as driving force through the young Amir’s eyes. In more ways than one Baba affected the people around him. He was displayed to the soldier who donned the armor; however, he himself hid secrets. Despite knowing that Hassan was his son, he carried to his grave the truth of his birth. Not once did he tell Amir of his true relations with his son, nor did he try to attempt. In a way Baba is a hypocrite who preached that thievery is the worst of sins, but stole the opportunity for Hassan to live a better life. However with that in mind Amir did grow to atone for his sins, because he was his father’s son. In the end Amir took it upon himself to purge the sins his father started and he…

The theme of betrayal is prominent through the lies told by Baba and Amir and through Amir’s disloyalty to Hassan. When Amir is a child his father states, "There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft…" (17). Baba’s quote reveals that much of what happens in the novel would be considered sin. While Baba stressed that there was nothing worse than a thief, he himself robbed Hassan and Amir of the truth about their relation. Baba lied to them both their entire lives and Amir only learned that Hassan was his brother after Baba and Hassan were both dead. It reveals that Baba was not as strong on the inside as he pretended to be on the outside. While he may have wrestled bears he did not have the strength to tell the truth at risk of damaging his reputation.…

He betrayed Hassan and Amir by not telling them that they are half brothers. In the end, he did not tell them that they are brothers. “And now , fifteen years after I’d buried him, I was learning that Baba had been a thief. And a thief of the worst kind, because the things he’d stolen had been sacred: from me the right to know I had a brother, from Hassan his identity, and from Ali his honor”(Hosseini 225). It was Rahim Khan who told Amir after Baba and Hassan had already died. Amir could not believe it because Baba went against what he thought was the only sin, theft. “Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, there is only one sin. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft”(Hosseini 17). He stole their right to know that they are brothers which Baba always told Amir was wrong. Baba also told him that cheating was theft, and Baba stole Ali’s wife when he slept with her. “When you kill a man, you steal a life,” Baba said. “You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you lie you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness”(Hosseini 18).…

He went up to Hassan and threw a pomegranate at him so that Hassan would throw one back. However, Hassan didn’t, so Amir calls him a coward. "But Hassan did nothing as I pelted him again and again. “You’re a coward!” I said. “Nothing but a goddamn coward!” (Page 92 and 93) Amir called Hassan a coward when it is the complete opposite. When Amir and Hassan were first encountered by Assef in the book, Hassan protects Amir with his sling shot. When Assef came up to Hassan and rapes him, Amir stood and watch taking no action. So when Amir calls Hassan a coward, it’s ironic because Hassan stood up for himself and Amir while Amir is still like a little boy who is too spoiled to make decisions for himself and too cowardly to defend themselves. Even though technically Amir is in a higher class than Hassan because he’s not a Hazara, Amir has the personality of a defenseless peasant while Hassan is a brave…
