Drug Name: Amitiza

Average adult dose: 8 mcg orally twice a day with food and water

Therapeutic effects:
Amitiza is used to treat (IBS) irritable bowel syndrome in women with constipation as a main symptom and chronic constipation caused by opioid a narcotic pain medicine. IBS is an invasive gastrointestinal functional bowel disorder, characterized by a recurrent crampy diarrhea and abdominal pain. Amitiza is only used for adults, it increases the secretion of the fluid in intestines to help make it easier for the stools to pass

Some unwanted effects may be caused by amitiza. If any of these symptoms occur please consult your doctor immediately:
More common: swelling of the abdominal or stomach area, nausea, pressure in the stomach, full or bloated feeling, diarrhea
Less common: vomiting, unusual tiredness or weakness, trouble sleeping, tightness in the chest, sweating, sore throat, shortness of breath, shivering, runny nose, muscles aches, loss of bowel control, loss of appetite, joint pain, increased sweating, headache, general feeling of discomfort, fever, labored breathing, cough, cold or flu-like symptoms, chills, chest pain, blood in the stools
Incidence not known: swelling skin rash, hives, fast pounding irregular heartbeat, fainting, difficulty swallowing, stomach tenderness
Some amitiza unwanted side effects may not necessarily need any medical attention because as the body gets used to the drugs the said side effects just disappear, if any of these symptoms persist consult your doctor immediately:
Symptoms of overdose: weight loss, severe or unusual tiredness or weakness, paleness of the skin, lack or loss of strength, feeling of warmth, dry mouth, dry heaves
Precautions:
Some medical conditions may interact with amitiza.
Do not take this drug if you have other gastrointestinal obstruction:
• History of hernia
• Diverticulitis
• Impacted bowel movement
• Hirschsprung’s disease
• Crohn’s disease
• Gallstones
Some medicines may interact with amitiza. Do not take this drug if you are taking medicines other than amitiza. Always consult your doctor before taking any
medications
