Related to his relationship with people around him, literacy can gives positive and negative impacts. Amory in TSOP was able interact with people around him who had the same reading interest. Literacy unifies him with Burne, Kerry, Tom, Eleanor and Clara who have the same basic education or the same literary hobby. Yet, it also creates a gap on his relationship with some people. His self-confident and believe that he is one of the superior because of his reading ability making him hated by Mr. Reardon when he went to school in Minneapolis.

Reardon ability in teaching France and by showing off in his class, he unconsciously shows his disrespect to his teacher which made his teacher choose to give him a lesson, which in Amory’s point of view is rather ‘taking revenge in verbs’. His knowledge ability makes him questioned the authority of his teacher. Beside with his teacher, Amory also creates gaps between him and his friends in St. Regis at his first term. In this quotation, Anthony believes that his grandfather does not have the intelligence to be able to have the power to control people, yet he has it. Just like Mogre in Nelson (1999) stated “role of the aged becomes weakened because of the literacy and the literate persons who are knowledgeable questioned the authority of the old”, Anthony’s grandfather’s role in controlling Anthony’s life is weakened as Anthony questioned his grandfather’s authority to make him working.
