Amphipod Reburrowing Assignment
Amphipod Reburrowing Assignment

1. What is the problem or the question to be solved?
The question that was presented was how the pollution in the water is effecting the benthic organisms that have limited movement if at all and they can’t escape the pollution around them.

2. What is the hypothesis that was tested?
The hypothesis was that if the contaminated sediment in the water affected the Amphipods burrowing, then the reburrowing time for L. Plumulosus amphipods should increase.

3. What are the variables that were used?
The variables of this experiment were the sediment, the researchers used clean sediment and contaminated sediment (Baltimore sediment) to test its effects on Amphipods.

4. Based on your answer to the previous question, how was the hypothesis tested?

Plumulosus were placed in different types of sediment to measure the time the amphipods needed for reburrowing. First, the 40 amphipods were placed in contaminated-free sediment from Queens Creek. Second, half of those amphipods were moved to contaminated sediment, and the other half were moved to a clean contaminated sediment. Both groups were kept in there for 18 days. From the first 20, 10 amphipods were moved to clean sediment tank, and 10 were moved to Contaminated Baltimore sediment. From the second 20 amphipods 10 were transferred to clean sediment, and 10 were moved to clean sediment tank. The reburrowing times for each amphipods from the different tanks was measured in seconds.

5. Which set of amphipods had the fastest average reburrowing time? Which had the slowest? Explain
The fastest average burrowing time for amphipods were the ones placed in the clean water and moved to clean water (average 3.3 sec)
The slowest ones were the ones placed in the contaminated Baltimore sediment and moved to Baltimore sediment (average 109.6
