Amy Tan's Acquisition Of Their Children Character Analysis

Martone is the author well known for his fiction story ‘The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction. In this story Martone has brought about the theme of talent nurturing and used different families to demonstrate how parents natures their children’s talents. The narrator, Amy Tan, has been used by the author to show how parents dictate what the child shall be. The mother of the narrator has been watching television and seeing how young people have obtained fame and she forces her daughter to obtain hers also. The mother tries acting where the narrator is finally defeated for the mother has just forced her. Secondly, she works the housecleaning job in exchange to the piano lessons. In this case, the narrator piano teacher is a deaf. In that essence, she is not able to get the correct piano playing skills due to the uncorrected mistakes.
On the other hand, through the forcing of her mother, the narrator encounters the men seducing in a young age from the piano teacher.
In this, Martone tried to bring the reader in to the light and show how the parents contribute to the failing of their children. The author, showed how comparison of the children is wrong. He showed the reader the assumption that the parents have to the nurturing of their children. Many parents do not understand that talents differ from one child to the other. In addition, the author demonstrated that the interests of children differ. As he tried to compare Tan to her friend Jong who has gained her fame as the littlest champion due to her talent in chess. This comparison of children does not motivate but just demotivates them. This was well shown to the reader by the author trying to prepare the young parents and sharpen the nurturing of their
children.
The author, Martone have greatly demonstrated child demotivation through the narrator of the story. The author has shown the narrator being rude to her mother and also quick to tempers. In this essence, the author was trying to show the reader that forcing a child to do something is not a positive way of nurturing. In addition, the author used the narrator to show the reader what tempers can lead to. The narrator ended up being beaten after responding to her mother rudely. The narrator had a low self esteem as the author demonstrates. As she mentions to her mother that she can not be a genius nor be shown in television, the author tried to show the reader that the narrator had low esteem. This showed that children need motivation for their self esteem to develop and be able to see that they are able. The both the theme of talent nurturing and the character Amy Tan have been used very well by the author to make the reader understand the story. The story and the theme is a great teaching to the parents on how to bring up their children and what they should not do to the children in order to recognize their talent. The author has cautioned the parents on making comparison of their children to others. Under the characterization, the narrator has been demonstrated as rude and trying to discover her talent. In addition, the author has also shown the consequences of children being forced by their parents on talent discovery.
