‘Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanities of Human Life’ by Harmen Steenwyck

I chose the art work ‘Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanities of Human Life` by a dutch painter, Harmen Steenwyck (*1612 ✝1956). Today this painting is in the National Gallery in London, it is estimated that the painting was drawn in ca. 1640. The Dutch Vanities Painting is made by oil on oak panel.

In the painting you can see a skull, which might symbolise death. The books, which symbolise knowledge, and the flute, which represents the pleasure of music, both also represent luxuries of life. The shell and the Japanese sword represent wealth, as only a rich collector would have them. The sword might also represent military power. Also the purple silk cloth represents wealth, as it is a very expensive cloth and at that time purple was the most expensive colour. The pocket watch and the oil lamp, which has just been ceased, symbolise the passing of life and the transience of human life. The object in the painting are all in a triangle which fills half of the painting, the other half of the painting is empty, there is only a beam of light, which makes the panting more dramatic and illuminates the skull.

Harmen Steenwyck uses oil on oak panel. By painting many layers of oil paint he can create the different textures of the objects (the reflections of metal, the translucency of the bone, the smoothness of silk, the texture of wood etc.). In this painting Harmen Steenwyck also drew many different forms like the organic forms of the scull and the shell, the form of the cloth, the books, the oil lamp and the form of the sword. The artist didn’t use and bright colours as it would destroy the atmosphere of the picture and since there are so many different textures and forms it would be too different and the viewer had too much to concentrate on.

For example, the iron that the ferry is made of. This is seen on the walls of the ferry, the pillars, the floor, and the chairs. Because there are light bulbs in the ceiling of this ferry’s deck, the light of these are then reflected on these surfaces by using lighter colors, mostly white, which through this noticeable and shiny reflection along with the long brush strokes add smoothness to these, it makes the texture of these appear like iron. Another example is in the floor of the boat’s floor, where we can tell that there are water puddles because of the texture depicted in them, which is done through the reflection of the lights again made with lighter colors and mostly white, the irregular randomized brush strokes as well as the different colors used to portray how certain parts of the floor are wet (with the use of darker colors) and others are dry. Then there are also the buildings in the back which we can see are made of glass because of again the use of reflection made with different colors, especially…

The art piece that I selected for my analysis is called The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul Rubens. The artwork is an oil painting on canvas, circa 1625. This piece of art was commission by Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Portugal. The Triumph of Divine Love was one of eleven art pieces in a series portraying the Eucharist cycle, an important issue in the Catholic-Protestant strife. Its purpose was to aid in the Catholic Reformation and the artwork was to be displayed at the Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. (Ringling Museum n.d.)…

This painting is one in a series to honor women and comment on their "place" in pre-revolutionary China. As courtesans and prostitutes they are elevated in the artist's hands, isolated in a field of paint, accompanied by emblems and images from classic Chinese paintings. Characters for Nu Wa, a Chinese creation goddess are painted over her groin. Nu-Wa was the inventor of marriage and made humans by slinging a rope. The hand made meant that it was noble, and made with rope stood for poor. The multiple circles around the painting means Pi in the Chinese language, which translated means universe and it’s surrounding the women in the painting. The thing that stands out the most is the red square in the middle of the painting. This means female in Chinese and makes sense since its on the women’s groin I think this painting means uniformity and creation of people. The giant butterfly in the painting can stand for multiple things such as change, joy, and love. Also can show a feminist side to the women in the painting make her look innocent.…

Before oil paint was popular their was the medium tempura. But, Northern Europe came to the realization that using oil paints gave the same effects as tempura but it was more readily available and effectively achieved. Oil painting is very versatile and can be painted right on the canvas which gives the painting a variety of hues and colors as well as light. As you can see in After a Wedding, Janet fish uses the oil paint to create a three dimensional effect, this is done by using the oil paint right out of the tube and taking advantage of its thick consistency which is referred to as impasto. She also uses the oil paints versatilely to create an illusion of illuminate light as though the sun is shining down on the still life. This is achieved by glazing the painting with thin films of translucent colors giving it its luminous…

The meaning of the painting, as perceived, is the hindrance black people faced in entering the land of prosperity; the obstacle they faced was nothing other than White dominance. There is a White giant like figure in the middle of the painting with a sharp teethed wolf or monster underneath, creating a sense of evilness and scariness. They block the blacks from entering their dreams, in other words, a successful life. As a result, black people are sad and…

In the story, “The Terrible Things,” the author, Eve Bunting, uses narrative to influence the reader's’ understanding of history/ Holocaust by using a moral that can change everyone, good deeds come back which is the moral of the story. An example from the story says “‘We have come for every creature with bushy tails,’ roared the Terrible Things. The squirrels chatter their fear and ran high into the treetops. But the Terrible Things swung their terrible nets higher than the squirrels could run and wider than the squirrels could leap and they caught them all and carried them away.…

Some objects in the painting are a pregnant woman, a burning candle, a skull, and a cross lying on the table under some books. The way the woman’s head is rested on her hand and she is staring into the candle light, shows that she is in deep thought. I believe that the woman is reflecting upon her life. She looks to be pregnant, which represents life. The unity of…

I chose a medieval art where Judith cut off the head of Holofernes. The story behind this painting is that Judith saved the Jews of Bethulia from being destroyed by Holofernes, who had brought his whole army to her village. Judith wanted the elders to interfere with general Holofernes plans, but they told her to leave things in the hands of God and to trust in him. Instead, she decided to deal with things herself if no one was going to do anything about it. Judith was a beautiful widow determined to do whatever it takes. She gained the trust of the general, says she has information on the Israelites. The general comes to admire her and invites Judith to his banquet, so she then puts on the finest clothes on and goes to find the general in his tent. She gets him drunk and seduces him, and he goes to lie down in bed expecting her to follow him, but she goes and gets his sword and cuts his head off.…

The skull could be considered the focal point of the painting, because of the subtle contrast of color with the blues and reds around it, and how everything seems to lead to it. The skull is in proportion with the other objects, but it is much larger than each other individual object, which is part of what draws your attention to it. The elements and principles of design help significantly to understand the content of the piece. The image might look random and chaotic until one is able to see that all of the lines on the painting are moving in a circular motion to emulate a wheel. Then you take into account the different objects in the wheel and can see it as the journey of life.…

As soon as I stepped into the Social Realism exhibition room of Tate Modern, I was prompted with paintings of different styles and subjects. This room’s exhibitions’ era stretches from the 1920’s to the 1940’s, with artists from celebrated muralist Diego Rivera to controversial surrealist Balthus. This room exhibited works of many different medias from traditional oil-on-canvas works to colour pastel on paper. This room may seem slightly bland at first sights as they’re mainly portraits of plain-looking working class people and politicians, but behind the paintings themselves, lies within stories and opinions of different perspectives on commoners’ lifestyle, politics, and war of that time.…

The artwork I selected was The Lamentation, Figure 8.1 painted by Giotto di Bondone in 1305 in Italy. The artworks style is naturalism. Naturalism is the practice of painting things exactly as they are, the emphasis being on authenticity. The artist placed importance on the quality of “realness” in art. He observed humans and reproduced their gestures, expressions and movement in art (artble) The subjects in the painting are the followers of Christ surrounding his body after his death. Mary Magdalene is shown at Christ’s feet and Christ lies in his mother’s lap. (saylor) The subjects are in active, natural poses: leaning, holding, sitting and bending. Giotto used the fresco technique to create “The Lamentation”. (teacher.nicholas)…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
