Jones’ William Clark… chapter 3 starts with George Rogers Clark (GRC) declining Jefferson’s offer to lead a military excursion westward, suggesting that a few men could sufficiently do the job. Jones then writes of the Clark family’s belated travels across the Appalachians and down the dangerous Monongahela and Ohio rivers before landing outside Louisville and building a farm. He then writes about more problems with Indians, prompting GRC to lead an unsuccessful military campaign after a forced peace treaty was disregarded by non-invested tribes. William Clark is also written about: his joining of and exploits in the Kentucky militia, his journalizing of these exploits and the areas they took him, his self-taught education and naturalistic writings, and his commissioning as a lieutenant in the newly reformed, post-St. Clair’s Defeat US Army. Clark’s early duties as a lieutenant, Jones writes, involved ferrying soldiers and supplies around western outposts and forts, and even to the Chickasaw Indian tribe once. Within a few years, Clark became quartermaster of one of the four Sub-Legions of the US Army, joining the campaign into northern Indian lands that culminated in the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the final and deciding battle in the Northwest Indian War. Jones then recounts General Anthony Wayne’s successful…

A door opened, and Earl Genofile stepped out to see what had happened. Earl was at the grand age of 75. He had hearing aids, dentures, and a cane. He was a nice senior citizen as long as he got his five naps a day. He quickly hobbled back into his two-story house to find his wife. Helga Genofile was also 75 years old. Unlike Earl, Helga did not need hearing aids, dentures, or a cane. She had excellent health. In fact, she was sure that she was going to live well over a hundred. She was almost done with her two mile walk on her treadmill when she heard a giant crash. Helga went to find Earl. Then, she saw the flow. They would have to leave fast.…
Mr. Hittson I totally apologize for Coltens actions. He is definately being raised better than that. I have had a long talk with him over this issue. I noticed this morning Colten seemed upset about something when he got dropped off. When he got into the school I texted him and told him to not let anything deter him in school if he is upset. He has been having girlfriend issues that I have been trying to guide him through and I think that is what has been wrong with him. He's usually not like this. He is being raised in a very good home with good guidance. I told him I will not tolerate him using profanity and disrespecting the teachers or the school. I also told him that in the future if he acts the same with future bosses, then he will be…
Some people with relatives that have undergone plastic surgery presume that it automatically increases a child’s confidence by making them feel better about their appearance. Jill Weinstein, the mother of Jen Selter(child who underwent rhinoplasty/nose job), asserts her opinion on plastic surgery: “Jen is so happy now... I would say to parents ... it’s[plastic surgery] the greatest gift you could give to your child. What greater gift is confidence and to help them feel happy in who they are?”(qtd. in Coffey).…
The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is a well written ghost story detailing the fictional events at an estate in the town of Bly, England. This story is captivating and a thriller to read. Henry James has written over 75 works, varying in style from plays to novels. There are very few characters in this story which allowed for detailed characterization, and leaves the reader with a mental image of how they would view each character such as when the narrator, The Governess, tells the reader, “ I felt ... that I had seen him, on the instant ... the same … in which I had ... seen his little sister. He was incredibly beautiful.” This kind of characterization makes the discussion of the Governess as a heroine, rather than being…
The widely admired work of William Shakespeare has been, over the span of decades, adapted into films which originate from the same source but differ in context and means of portrayal. Filmmakers, as generations grow and society evolves, must master the art of successfully reaching out and empathizing with differing audiences whilst taking in the social, cultural and economic values widely appropriated by societies, into serious consideration. Kenneth Branagh directed and interpreted his adaptations of Hamlet by Shakespeare. Branagh, in his adaptation (1996), have interpreted Act 5, Scene 1, quite distinctly in means of sound/music, costumes and make up, lighting, camera angles and shot compositions, and editing. All of these factors are relevant…
When understanding what a family goes through with having a child with special needs such as Autism it is important to know the fundamental facts about Autism. Autism is a rare disease that has been recognized for centuries. In the past decade, Autism has reached a peak of being recognized The purest form of autism occurs in about one in 2,000 people, which would be what we consider autism in the DSM-5 ; researchers are currently narrowing down the criteria so that fewer children with milder symptoms are labeled as autism. Autism is found in every race, ethnic group, nation, and social standing, although males outnumber females by four or five times.…
Someone who is defined as unreliable often are deceiving and misleading. Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby is a perfect example of an unreliable character. Right from the beginning of the novel, he bluntly described himself as someone who doesn’t judge anyone, yet he judges everyone that he meets. Not only that but he lies to people so he could avoid the awkwardness of the unseemly. Others may say he is reliable by that he stayed loyal to Gatsby throughout the entire novel, but his feelings toward Gatsby changed. In the end, it is evident that Nick is a dishonest narrator.…
In the Museum of Natural History, Holden enthusiastically informs two boys over the Egyptian burial process while revealing his own fears. It is notable that Holden focuses on the Egyptians ability to preserve the face, and fails to mention any other body part. Metaphorically, Holden is worried about his own “face.” He is afraid of disappearing, of being unnoticed, and of being ignored. The way Holden tells his story is way of preserving his individuality and achieving his own Egyptian immortality.…
Boon’s Narrative is a primary example of American Romanticism. In Filson’s writing, Boon is a strong hero who travels through Kentucky to survey the land for John Filson. The narrative is composed of descriptive details and models aspects of myths such as a hero’s adventure through perilous lands. The narrative also encompasses important features of American Romanticism. The narrative depicts the beauty and danger of the land: as well as, the mysterious atmosphere of nature. The narrative shows the expansiveness and resource availability of Kentucky. Filson’s reason for writing is similar to Smith’s work because both are using persuasion to obtain what they want. Filson’s reason for writing the narrative is to find investors for the 13,000 acres he obtained in Kentucky. Filson is using persuasion tactics and imagery to strengthen the…
Through my time being with the church I have never questioned or doubted the sacredness of our work once, but recently I have come to find myself realizing that the duty performed by reverends of this sanction are ill minded in determining the wrongfulness of a fellow towns member’s affairs. I am now considering leaving the church; I must record all of my reasons for doing so in this journal.…
In my essay I chose to write about Henry Repeating Rifles. I choose to write about this because it was the first repeating rifle designed and patented and it changed the civil war hugely. The repeating rifle was made in 1860 by Benjamin Tyler Henry. It took him three years for him design the repeating rifle. The henry rifle shot a .44-40 or .45 long colt a more powerful round for that time. For a civil war soldier it was his point of pride and would often brag about it in letters back home calling it his “Sixteen” for the amount of rounds it held.…
