The piece of Art, Smiling Girl, a Courtesan Holding an Obscene Image, painted by Gerrit van Honthorst in 1625 can be seen at the Saint Louis Art Museum. I was initially drawn to this image from across the gallery mostly due to the subject’s bright red dress with gold sleeves, it was one of the brightest colored images in the gallery. It is about three feet tall and two feet wide, it is an oil on canvas painting. As I approached the image, I was still intrigued as the image she is holding is of a naked man facing away, the subject in the painting seems to get enjoyment from this. To me this piece of art makes me curious, I want to know who this woman was and why she is holding that image. The artist seems to be communicating the importance of…

A sacramentary “was a liturgical book used for prayer during the High Middle Ages, containing prayers, prefaces and canons for mass” (“The Drogo Sacramentary”); this sacramentary was created between 845-855 CE for Drogo, the Bishop of Metz (“The Drogo Sacramentary”). This artwork is interesting to me because it illustrates the religious beliefs of French society in a beautiful and articulate manner. An artistic pattern found in illuminated manuscripts is a painted scene within an individual letter. For instance, in this illuminated manuscript a scene from the Lord’s ascension into heaven is painted inside the letter “C” (“Carolingian Art”, see Figure 1). It is amazing to consider how small the area is for the artist to paint; still the artist is able to illustrate a mountain, 12 disciples, two angels, and Jesus in a limited space. The artist uses colors of gold, red, yellow, green, blue, and black; these colors are simple, yet the combination of them is bold and grabs the viewer’s…
“What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed” (Michelangelo). Michelangelo was one of the great artist who created great art during the Renaissance period. One of his most popular paintings is the Ceiling from the Sistine Chapel with the Creation of Adam being the main focal point. Art in the Renaissance period was more focused on the aspects of realism, humanism, and the prospective of what was created. Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps the most interesting artist of the Renaissance period; with that, he still holds presumably the most idealized painting in the world today, priced upwards of $1 Billion the Mona Lisa. Both…
With the rise of the Protestant Reformation in the early 16th century, many artists found themselves either supporting Protestant or Catholic religious belief. It was during this period that visual imagery was being challenged greatly by influential figures like Martin Luther who believed that art in religion should be obsolete. Including this came along the challenges of the Catholic Church and its structure’s stray from focusing on the salvation of its followers. It was this Reformation that caught the attention of artists who agreed with this belief. For instance, artists like Albrecht Durer, found themselves supporting and sympathizing with this new reformation, by including references in their artwork. Two artists who began to explore printmaking in this time were Albrecht Durer and Lucas van Leyden. With the invention of the printing press, artist found positives in distribution; printmaking being cheap and efficient. With this they were able to create two prints of the same subject matter with different details enlightening the viewer of artistic differences at this time. Both artists share very similar qualities in their work: visual composition, because of societal differences.…
One of the most influential artists of the Modern Period of art was James Whistler. Whistler was an accomplished printer and painter and a brief background of the painter allows us to understand Whistler, and why more than any artist of his time, he would be attracted to Japanese woodblock prints called Ukiyo-e. It is also essential to understand the essence of Ukiyo-e, Japanese aesthetics and its migration to the Western world. Additionally, a chronological selection of Whistler’s works must be analyzed showing how he integrated the lessons he learned from his exposure to Ukiyo-e.…
The Dutch emphasis on landscape had influenced many artists during the Renaissance period — Bruegel among them. This style of painting and Bruegel’s integration of social values in his paintings helped create many masterpieces.…
From my perspective, but limited familiarity with works of art in general, the Raphael painting is significant in that it is considered a prime example of High Renaissance art and considered Raphael’s masterpiece. I believe it is also significant because as a component of the School of Athens (1509-1511) the painting over a period of 500 years continues to influence discussion and analysis among art historians and scholars.…
While the Pardoner’s various exempla and poetic tropes direct his audience towards a particular perspective, his rhetoric transcends persuasiveness; not only does the Pardoner force the pilgrims to share his viewpoint, he seeks to materially benefit from his carefully cultivated language. The Pardoner’s intention is therefore not simply to persuade, but to advertise. In his essay “Advertising, Rhetoric, and Literature: A Medieval Response to Contemporary Theory,” Andrew Cowell examines Medieval preaching as a popular form of advertisement, claiming that the clergy’s persuasive discourse used “the illicit seduction of rhetoric” to appeal to “desire rather than truth” (Cowell 813). The Pardoner’s ability to incite desire is integral to his business, as his rhetoric must appeal to a longing for salvation rather than just offer it. Likewise, when customers buy the Pardoner’s relics, they are really buying the healing properties the Pardoner advertises. The Pardoner therefore sells his advertisements in tandem with the relics. For example, the Pardoner constantly repeats “tak of my wordes kepe” or “Tak kepe eek what I telle” (Chaucer 352; 360), acting as if his words were physical goods that the pilgrims can use in their quest for spiritual enlightenment. He jeopardizes his ability to induce desire however when he reveals his deceitful intentions; while he advertises…

The Renaissance started in the 1400s; this time of culture took place in all of Europe. During this time art and literature had flourished. Artists had been at their best during the high renaissance which was during the 1500’s. During this time people had used oil on canvas for the first time. These techniques gave more details and depth to the painting. This was called perspective. The Mona Lisa was a world renowned painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. It was a painting of his wife even though she was not very special historically. This painting was so popular that it had set the standard for all other paintings of that time. Another painting that Leonardo painted was “The Last Supper “was Jesus with his disciples eating. This painting had amazing…
Throughout history, art has been used to depict events, traditions, and beliefs. The usage of such principles of art is prevalent during the Gothic age, transitioning to the Renaissance period. Artist across Europe were influenced by the distinct styles of the two time periods, and it is apparent in many sculptures and paintings by famous artists such as Giotto and Michelangelo. The two consecutive art eras, are based around religion and the church; many of the paintings and sculptures that are staple pieces of the Gothic age and Renaissance period are either architecture, paintings, or sculptures used for religious purposes.…
Renaissance is the name given to the extensive movement of cultural revitalization that takes place in Western Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. A new mentality emerged that manifested itself in the intellectual, cultural, religious, and artistic spheres. There are several cultural changes; humanism, intellectual movement and renaissance, artistic style. There are also some changes of mentality because of the religious crisis and the Protestant Reformation. As Martin Luther, author of the “95 Theses”, coments: “ This word cannot be understood as referring to the sacrament of penance, that is, confession and satisfaction, as administered by the clergy”. They were changing the way they think, and the clergy did not like those changes. As we had talked in class, two worlds were growing together at that time; secular and scared.…
The Catholic Church came across of a lot of challenges throughout the reformation. For example, Martin Luther’s challenge which really set the church off in a bad direction and made them look horrible to a lot of church goers. Although they came across these challenges, the church fought back by rebirthing the catholic church and sending out the Jesuits.…
