“I put all my trust into you not knowing what I was going to lose”(unknown). A man with special needs, Lennie Smalls, struggles to live a normal life and being in a time period where people with special needs do not get treated right only adds more weight into striving. After the death of Lennie’s aunt, Clara, George promises to protect Lennie. In John Steinback’s novella, Of Mice and Men, Lennie trusted George to protect and stay with him through thick and thin. George knew that he would be able to live a better life without Lennie’s disabilities holding him back. After a tragic event made by Lennie, George was left with a heavy decision. Lennie trusted George with his life, but what he didn’t know was that he was the one going to end it.

Published in 1937, John Steinbeck wrote a moving and powerful novel titled, Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck’s reliance on textual description makes the work accessible to young readers, as does his use of foreshadowing and reoccurring images. Equally important is the way Steinebeck intertwines loneliness, friendship, and sadness. A professor at the University of San Jose stated, “The near impossibility of attaining the American Dream in the face of the huge and random challenges, like natural and economic disasters became the central theme of Steinbeck’s novel” (“Of Mice and Men – Critical Reception” 1). Marxist and New Criticism were the two approaches applied to the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.…

[Candy] said miserably, "You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn't no good to himself nor nobody else”(Steinbeck 60). Candy is introduced in the start of chapter two, he is described indirectly by the narrator as a “Stoop shouldered old man”(Steinbeck 18). He is said to have a round stump on his right arm, but no hand. His dog enters later in chapter two, whom is described as a “dragfooted sheepdog, gray of a muzzle, and with pale, old eyes”(Steinbeck 26). Through these characters, Steinbeck helps the reader understand the stereotype of the uselessness of the elderly and disabled. Along with this, Candy and his dog create a parallel with George and Lennie.…

“Truth is everybody is going to hurt you: you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for” (Bob Marley). The novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, was set in the Great depression. In the novel George has to deal with Lenny every single day and it’s not easy, but he loves him and he just has to accept that Lenny is part of his life. In this book, society was frustrating. People were very sexist, and instead of coming together and helping each other everyone kept to themselves this is also known as isolation. Also, during this time people who suffered from mental and physical disabilities were often isolated and faced discrimination. Steinbeck identifies many societal problems during the Great Depression, and brings them to light in his novella Of Mice and Men.…

Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, is an intriguing and captivating piece that captures America’s history. Throughout the text, Steinbeck demonstrates how multiple prejudices can affect contrasting characters in the 1930’s. Lennie Small and George Milton, a pair of bindlestiffs, witness the discrimination throughout the course of the novel. George cares for Lennie, who is mentally challenged, and once Lennie’s onerous actions increase, George makes the formidable decision to abruptly end his life. The characters in the story are faced with internal and external conflicts. These are shown for the duration of the text, supporting the theme: prejudice and discrimination can cause isolation. Steinbeck develops this theme through the literary elements, characterization, conflict and imagery.…

Lennie's retarded mind causes the death of Curley's wife and his puppy. For example when Lennie killed Curley's wife it was because of his slow mind that caused her to panic and Lennie to shake her telling her to stop which ultimately killed her. When Lennie was petting her hair, she told him to stop because he will ruin her hair. Once she got angry, Lennie got scared and grabbed her hair, causing her to panic and lead Lennie to shake her to her death. Another example would be when Lennie was playing with the puppy and was throwing it up into the air not thinking about the consequences. Lennie was “playing” with his puppy throwing him in the air, but Lennie unable to think about the consequences quick enough shook the puppy to its death.…

In of mice and men, characters are cruel when they have power to control others of lower status. Many characters display a disregard for ones feeling or emotions through physical and verbal actions. On the ranch, hierarchy is extremely prominent and cruelty is a side effect of it. The characters that are lower of status are not cruel to those above. The character Curley’s wife, is an impeccable example of this. Even though she is of lower status on the ranch, she still has power over those below her. Crooks is one of those character, he is a coloured man and she uses this against him. During section 4, crooks is discusses plans with Lennie and candy, he forgets his circumstances in the ‘white man’s world’. He tells Curley’s wife that she has…

Everyone called me dumb because I did not have the same education as everyone else. People use to say “You’ll never be as smart as me because you were born in a dumb state.” They use to make fun of my accent, they would taunt me and say “Howdy y’all!” and act like a cowboy.…

Before you criticize an innocent human being, do you walk a mile in his shoes? Everyone has heard it at some point in their lives, and most would unconsciously agree that it is morally correct to do so. Unfortunately, some individuals do not understand how big of an impact this life lesson has on society and simply ignore the common proverb. The negative impacts of this decision are portrayed through John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men. Lennie Small, a mentally handicapped individual, has challenges thrown at him throughout his short journey of life, making it even more painful to live. The great depression was a time of strife for many people. This cannot be more true for the migrant workers of California who went around the state looking for work and never staying long in the same place. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck portrays this experience of migrating from job to job and living paycheck to paycheck, along with the loneliness that goes along with the experience, through George and Lennie’s experiences. George and Lennie are unique in that they travel together and as such are not affected by loneliness as much as some of the other characters are in the book. Of Mice and Men shows how loneliness and isolation affects the human experience in a positive and negative…
