Students attend college for the main purpose of receiving a degree and obtaining a job. If poor grammar is inhibiting students from getting a job after college, grammatical principles of writing should be more heavily emphasized within the college curriculum. But, do employers even care about the level of grammatical ability their applicants have? To find the answer to this question, it was important to consider how employers in the professional world feel about grammatical ability and how it varies from profession to profession. Reading articles about grammar in the workplace, analyzing blogs posted by employers, and conducting interviews with employers were the main methods we used to research this question. Articles provided a general idea of how poor grammar affects productivity in the workplace. Additionally, blogs posted by employers showed how poor grammar reflects negatively on the applicant’s intelligence. Finally, interviews with employers allowed us to ask specific questions about the feelings surrounding poor grammar in the workplace.…

Every day, kids are exposed to poor grammar. Many songs, television shows, movies, and magazines use incorrect grammar. Songs often include phrases instead of complete thoughts, and some songs even contain words that don’t exist. If that is all that students see and hear, they won’t be able to make a distinction between the correct and incorrect way to speak. Text messaging has also caused kids to have poor writing skills. Texting causes kids to write by using fragments, incorrect spelling, and poor punctuation. Americans don’t take the time to write correctly because they are so worried about getting things done quickly. U.S. citizens don’t want to be bothered with making sure their punctuation is correct or their comma is in the right place. Students need repeated, daily practice to get away from the high-speed lifestyle they are used to, in order to be able to utilize grammar in the right way. Focusing more on grammar during English classes will reinforce proper grammar, and eliminate the issues that text messaging and new technology bring.…

Nowadays with an increasing numbers of international students, majority of them suffer from the problem about writing an academic essay in English, more and more people study about it. Some scholars note that international students usually have problems to write essays in a new language because of the lack of grammar and vocabulary. Holopainen(1997,p.119 cited in Harris, 2010) claimed that “grammar and lexical inappropriateness” is an important reason in international students who often failed in writing. What’s more, Harris’s(2010,P.67) research between domestic and non-native students had found that English native speakers rarely make mistakes in grammar, but to overseas students, the moment of reversing different form order and even missing subjects together is fairly easy to be seen.…

Incorrect grammar can be corrected with the use of technology, but while writing an essay in class it may become difficult to use the correct words that may be unfamiliar due to the amount of exposure to the technology. Being grammatically incorrect is not a crime, but it is a little offensive and informal to the reader of a professional essay. It is very important to remember the fact that texting is, mostly, considered informal and due to that reason everyone must learn the correct use of grammar while writing an essay, a lab report, or a research…

This paper sheds light on the Idiomatic errors of Arab learners. First, idioms are one of the most important aspects in English. They are the most frequent and widely used in many situations, such as, daily conversation, meeting and written context. The definition of this aspect according to Kharma, Alhajjaj (1997)," An idiom is a fixed phrase, such as keep something under one's hat, whose meaning can't be predicated from a knowledge of the meaning of the individual words". So, an idiom is a group of words, in which has a different meaning from the meaning of the words taken individually or it could be a word, which its meaning is different from the dictionary meaning. This can make idioms hard for ESL students and learners to understand. Arab learners of English may have comprehension errors or misuse of idioms that will lead them to misunderstanding of native speakers. English idioms are more difficult to understand especially for non-native speakers as Arabic learners. Therefore, it should be corrected immediately in class in order to avoid feeling embarrassed when using them in daily situations or written context.…
