For this extra credit assignment I chose to watch an airing of ESPN SportCenter. The issue which I thought to be a major social problem regarding sport that was addressed in this show was the new found dress code implemented into the NBA that all of the players were to follow. This issue would not be considered so highly controversial if it had simply stated that players wear "business casual" attire when entering and leaving the stadium and when they are engaged in team or league business. The problem came when the dress code included no wearing of medallions, headphones, sunglasses (indoors) and other attire and accessories that a vast number of African American players on teams had been wearing since they began playing in the NBA. This is not to say that Whites did not also enjoy these "luxuries" but the majority of players in the NBA who were seen with medallions and headphones on were of African…
An issue that is often debated is whether or not sports uniforms worn by women purposefully lead to sexual harassment. Looking at all evidence, my claim is that women’s sports uniforms do not purposefully lead to sexual harassment, due to the fact that uniforms for every sports, including women’s, are made in specific ways. They are made in these ways for maximum movement and flexibility, for sex appeal, and to keep up with cultural norms. All of these reasons come from a variety of sports.…
1. Fallow acknowledges the objections of feminists to the phrase “throwing like a girl.” Yet that is not the only derogatory phrase towards women. Activities such as football, hockey and hunting are mainly men’s sports too. It is clear that women gather more negative associations than the male population. Feminists challenge the phrase “throwing like a girl” because it is proven that men and women’s shoulders are aligned similarly and there are no structural differences between them. Boys are taught from a young age the importance of sports and playing ball while girls are not. Feminists argue that there are many women who can throw better than men and that “it’s not gender that makes the difference in how they throw.” (388) In my opinion Fallow does a good job of negating such objections.…
In the thirty year span between 1830 and 1860, the Second Great Awakening did much to change the modern American mind by sparking the abolitionist movement, empowering women (in their domestic sphere) and forming the cult of domesticity, partially fixing the corrupt government through the temperance movement, and in the creation of many utopian societies by radical religious populations. Puritanism was kicked to the side when Evangelicalism took root. This religious renaissance was absolutely more optimistic than worship from the past; sin was no longer an inevitable part of your being. Rather, you could find salvation through yourself, so long as you avoided or repented your sin.3…
68% of girls play sports, between the ages of 9-11 years, or the “finding your identity period”. (Click) So when mini netball skirts that fly up with every move, are their uniform, what messaging are they getting? (click) Young girls nowadays are bombarded with pictures that only highlight ‘sexiness’ of sports women. (click) Women’s beach volleyball is more popular than most mainstream sports such as cycling, hockey and basketball. In 1999 the International Volleyball Federation regulated uniforms standards, but they were accused of selling the player’s looks rather than their talents. Hence the FIVB, allowed anything as long as it looks clean and professional. Yet, still women's sports are covering nothing except their capabilities. The first image is from a 1980’s professional volleyball team, and the second from the 2012 Olympics, and certainly the bikinis drew the crowd. In fact 90% of the audience were men between the ages of 16- 54, hence proving the impact that the appalling mistreatment of women’s bodies, has on men’s perception of us as pleasure objects. The degrading of women can also be blamed on the media’s repulsive…

Until recently, the world of sports was exclusive to men. But just because women have finally earned the right to step on to the playing field does not mean everything is equal. In her article “Purse Snatching” Donna Lopiano, director of the Women’s Sports Foundation, states her belief that the financial inequality between male and female athletes is caused by sexism. But since the profits in women’s sports are less than those in men’s sports there is no economically feasible way for female athletes to earn as much as their male counterparts.…
Before the 1970’s women had a very low chance of becoming a doctor or a lawyer just because they were women. They had a very low chance of getting into a college to even get that degree. If schools are a problem, then sports are an even bigger problem (Women’s Sport Foundation). People are thinking “Why are women treated as a lower class than men?”…
Next, the belief for basketball culture is to follow the dress code. In basketball culture, many people have different types of dress code for NBA and public schools. For example, the professional athletes from NBA must wear a nice suit, or wear fashion types of clothes. For high schools and university colleges, in an away game, they must dress in a sports jacket with sweatpants. But for a home game, the students must dress a collared shirt in a tie and black pant. For NBA and public schools, they must follow the rules for them to participate in the game. If they didn’t follow the rules, they would get a big punishment. For example, NBA athletes would get suspended for a couple of games, or get a fined that would cost them around 10,000 dollars.…
From the age of six females are taught a dress code to hide their bodies, so they do not distract the learning of males. In school females are told, when boys pull their hair or poke them with a pencil that it simply means that the boy likes her, to ignore the male's behavior. Young females are taught to be sexually objectified before. They even know what sex is. Females in school, fight and tease one-other then, Justify it by attractiveness. Furthermore, the popular girls are always the most attractive, teaching females to obsess over their bodies. It also teaches females to judge one another and continues into the adult life. The way a female is dressed, justifies males to look and opportunities for females to verbally sexually harass one-another due to attire. This category represents being seen as an object and lack of individually due to other's sexual urge. In women’s news, Ruthann Robson is time devoted professor at CUNY school of Law. Robson is the author of, "Dressing Constitutionally: Hierarchy, Sexuality and Democracy," published in 2013. According to Robson, “all males are heterosexual and males are given permission to be aggressive, by the way female's dress” (Robson). Robson is also Stating, “it is the female's responsibility to control the opposite sex though limiting their promiscuous attire” (Robson). Therefore, females are being told at a young age that the “dress code" is meant to prevent boys’ minds from wandering and thinking sexual of females visually. It gives males the justification for rape, “her clothes provoked me." Schools are unintentionally teaching this. However, they are taking the responsibility off of the boys and putting it on the female student’s shoulders. Strict dress codes for females allow females to be blamed for the harassment for violating the dress…

Having a school uniform isn’t ideal to every student, having to wear the same clothes over and over again everyday. “A female student at Buchanan High School said students are fighting back-not only because they feel they’re not free to express themselves, but also because they believe that clothing rules shouldn’t be different between genders” (Gabrielle Sorta). Not only do students not have the right to express themselves through clothing items, but based on gender they’re extremely restricted from being different.…
The new model of movement, represented by roller shoes, has influenced upon the majority of youngsters. The charm of roller shoes seduces children and knocks them out, which also shows unfettered spirit. However, every coin has two sides. As the popularity of roller skating, opposed voices occur. There is no denying that roller shoes wrought fundamental changes in our life. Nothing is more critical than to do physical exercises. The more exercises we do, the more healthy we are. But what people consider most essential point in taking physical exercises, especially among children, is the safety. The safety problem exists and this is no exception in roller shoes. In my opinion, benefits and advantages of roller shoes are evidenced by a series of…
