At the beginning of the movie, “The Little Mermaid”, a group of sailors on a ship are telling stories about the legendary merfolk. A young prince named Prince Eric is also on the ship with his dog, Max, and advisor, Grimsby. Grimsby tells the sailors that merfolk are not real, but one of the sailors tells him that he is wrong. One of the sailors is holding a fish, but loses it and the fish falls back into the sea. After the opening credits, the merfolk are heading to the underwater castle for a concert. The kingdom is ruled by King Triton, who is holding the concert in his name. His seven daughters and Sebastian, the court composer, are performing a song for him. The concert is going well until King Triton notices that, Princess Ariel, his…

You may argue evolution and how the two mammals look very similar but in contrast, we share 98% of our DNA with mice. Two species can be very similar in a physical or molecular structure. Mermaids on the other hand have no direct relatives. Conspiracists argue that they are a mistake in the evolutionary ladder. Nonetheless, they have one species they can call family. Mermaids swim along whales in what are call pods, a herd to protect themselves from predators and to hunt in an eloquent matter. Although mermaids and whales have minuscule amount of things in common physical, they have one thing in common. “They can also speak whale. Of course you’d expect mermaids to do so. The noise signatures for whale songs are distinct for each species” (Reed). Mermaids and whales have a sonar that is nearly at the same pitch, making it easy for the two species to communicate with each other. Communication between species makes finding safe waters and food more efficient. To a mermaid, a whale is the only other specie it can actually call…
There are two perspectives on this topic, with it or against it. Harp seals are overcrowding and lowering the population of fish in the Canadian waters, this leads to unemployment in many fish industries. There is an animal chain that has to be balanced, by having too many seals they overpopulate and jump the chain, their meat is a great source of omega 3 and 6, their pelts are water resistant and in many cases do not cause allergies, so the hunting sounds pretty beneficial. It’s the most regulated hunt of its kind & the population is large enough to sustain the hunting. There are 9.5 million harp seals and the hunting of seal pups has reduced the global seal population by two-thirds, but there are many other different ways to fix the problem…
Technology has given humans numerous advantages. One advantage, in particular, is the improvement in the way we think that results in a change in the way we learn. Although this advantage is very helpful in today’s world, there is a downside in its effect on the environment and our future. When militaries started occupying land, they began to enforce their own culture upon that land. This included using the military’s technology to advance civilization. Even though technology has made significant advancements and improvements in life, one must also consider how technology has hurt the environment. In the article “Which Species Will Live?” Michelle Nijhuis explains how technology has led to the important moral issue of whether or not to focus on saving one species at the cost of ignoring another and let it fall victim to extinction. David Foster Wallace’s article “Consider the Lobster” deals with the Maine Lobster Festival and shows how technology has led…
Legends of untold riches and beauty are popular with people because the possibility of achieving said greatness excites the masses. The lost city of Atlantis is one of the more popular legends, and it originated from a few pages in Timaeus and Critias, two of the famous “dialogues” written by Greek philosopher Plato in the fourth century B.C. Existing 9,000 years before his time, Plato described Atlantis as a great naval power and utopian island kingdom that mysteriously disappeared into the sea over the course of a single day. There are several theories regarding Atlantis and its possible whereabouts.…
This higher brain function can account for attacks such as the one by Kasatka who on two occasions, 1999 and 2006, attacked veteran trainer Ken Peters during live shows in SeaWorld San Diego (Hardgrove 97). In 1999, another whale named Tilikum made headlines when the mutilated body of a twenty-seven year old man was found floating in the water after he’d snuck into the facility and Tilikum attacked him (Hardgrove 98). Tilikum had previously killed a trainer in Sealand of the Pacific in 1991 before he was moved to SeaWorld, but that wasn’t cause to keep him away from performing. In 2010, Tilikum, now weighing 12,000 pounds, pulled trainer Dawn Brancheau by her ponytail, a standard for SeaWorld’s female trainers, and pulled her into his pool. He isolated her in the center of the pool by dunking her underwater and dragging her by her leg which he gnawed on. He bit at her until she died, throwing her up into the air like a ball, while an audience looked on and cameras filmed. He would pull her to the pool…
Modern tragedies have transformed and progressed from Ancient tragedies, not every tragic hero have to be a noble person. The short story “Mermaids”, written by Richard Van Camp is a modern tragedy, because Torchy is a regular person and the story contains tragic elements. Torchy’s hamartia, greed, prevents him from knowing the consequences of his actions; Torchy’s peripeteia, forget to wash his hand is resulted from his hamartia; Torchy’s anagnorisis in the story is demonstrated when he attempts to wash his hands with water.…
Picture this. You are a young kid again, taking your first vacation to Florida. It is the day you’re going to Sea World, a place you’ve dreamed about since you saw the first commercial on TV. Something just sparked your interest about all of the sea life there. As you walk in the entrance, you are filled with complete and utter joy. So much joy, you can barely hold your mother’s hand. You marvel at the sea lions and dolphins but what you really want to see is the Killer Whales. This specific creature is what sparked your interest in the first place and you’re finally sitting in your seat, awaiting the right of passage not many get to experience. The trainer comes on the speaker and you just feel jubilation wash over you as the show…
Seaworld, to this day, has a whale who has been brutally taken from his home, put in two different new homes, and in result to this situation he has killed three people. Despite his clearly shown aggressive traits, he has been used as a breeding machine for seaworld's past years, making 54% of the orcas at seaworld share his genes. This is why there has been a big debate since 1970 on whether or not these parks and entertainment should be allowed. These parks are making the animals sick and hurting them; Not only that, but they are teaching the people unrealistic expectations about the relationships between humans and animals. These animals lives are being shortened in captivity.…
One of the most underappreciated mythical sea creature is the mystical Siren. Sirens came about when Akhelios, son of Zeus and Lamia had children with 3 different women. The women where Akhelios+ Melpomena, Akhelios + Terpsikan, and Akhelios +Sterope (Atsma). There is an unclear number on how many sirens where there in a given time. “It was believed that there were either 2, 3 or even 5 sirens that roamed the waters at first” (Sirens, Allusions Sea Nymphs). Sirens are able to do many things, but “an individual siren cannot always overpower and enchant you, but a group of sirens can, this is why sirens always travel in groups (Ponzi)…
Incredible Mysteries and Legends of the Sea, a story by Edward Snow, talks of a Sea Captain and his encounter with a mermaid: “Captain John Smith saw a mermaid swimming about with all possible grace.” Then he begins describing her as having large eyes, long ears, and long green hair. He even explained that he was quite taken with the lovely mermaid, but he was disappointed when he saw she had a tail. In C.J.S. Thompson’s book The Mystery and Lore of Monsters C.J.S. Thompson noted “Traditions concerning creatures that are half-human and half-fish in form have existed for thousands of years, and the Babylonian deity Era or Oannes, the Fish-god, is represented on seals and in sculpture, as being in this shape for over 2,000 years B.C. He is usually depicted as having a bearded head with a crown and a body like a man, but from the waist downwards, he has the shape of a fish covered with scales and a tail.” So stories of mermaids have been popping up for centuries. Homer’s Odyssey, which was written around 800 B.C., narrates the story of Ulysses and how he was tormented by breathtaking siren song as they sang and tried to lure him to his ultimate demise. Unlike the sirens in the Odyssey, there are other legends that originated in Scotland and Wales that talk about how mermaids became friends with humans, and in some cases, married them. Throughout literary history there have been countless mentions…
Everybody loves going to the circus. How cool is it to see the ravenous tiger jump through a hoop of fire, the little monkey juggle, or see puppies do all kinds of tricks? People enjoy good entertainment, especially when it comes to animals being involved. Not only can they be used for satisfying the public, but they can also be useful to human resources, such as to the blind, deaf, or disabled. If animals can be used properly in positive ways then why are we abusing and neglecting them? Animals deserve to have the same rights as humans.…
