An Athlete An Agent Of Change Summary
The article The Athlete An Agent Of Change written by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton, is an opinionated piece is about Athletes who protest their beliefs by doing something that they are not supposed to be doing or doing something that is highly disrespectful. For example some Athletes will kneel or sit during the national anthem. This is a Highly disrespectful action because of all the men and the women who have lost their life fighting for this country and those athletes or people are going to disrespect the country that my relatives and friends have died for. It angers me to know that some people in this country have no sense of thankfulness. If you go to other countries there are people who don't care who you are they will make you respect

In the article, “The athlete as agent of change,” by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton, many athletes are using the national anthem to influence people. Many people dislike this however, I am fine with it. I see it as them trying to get across a point about a problem in the world, such as racism. Maybe they just think of the American flag do to all the problems in the world. For example it states,“He, too, saw the flag in a different light due to the racism he faced every day. As he wrote in his 1972 autobiography, "I cannot stand and sing the anthem. I cannot salute the flag; I know that I am a black man in a white world." As you can tell from the evidence provided the reason Jackie saw the flag in a different way was because of the color of…

Should college athletes be paid to play for their schools? In his article, “Athlete’s New Day,” Paul Marx argues that they should be, and that they will be soon due to the failing policies of the National Collegiate Athletics Association. Issues such as lawsuits over the sales of names and images of players and failure to compensate for long-term injuries sustained by players are beginning to wear down on the NCAA. With a protest movement growing, and attention turning to how professional the amateur college sports are, Marx sees changes coming right around the next bend.…

In an attempt to persuade high school football players against following the footsteps of Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback who refused to stand up for the playing of the American national anthem during their games to protest against systemic racism in the United States, David Brooks, in his article “The Uses of Patriotism,” calls Kaepernick’s actions “extremely counterproductive” as it creates a “crisis of solidarity.” To Brooks, sitting during the national anthem demonstrates a lack of gratitude to America’s ancestors and their legacy, and the loss of a sense that “we’re all in this together.” Throughout the article, he emphasizes on the importance of patriotism in the maintenance of the nation. He cites that the American…

In “Let Athletes Love Their Country in Their Own Ways” by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the author references Sam Kendricks’s and Colin Kaepernick’s public displays of political expression to explain that true patriotism is when a person is willing to make sacrifices to their personal gain in order to promote their problems with the government. Athletes need to use their status to make an impact and show that even the most famous people care. First of all, Kaepernick is not the only one to take a stand. In one of the Articles given, a piece of information was stated and here I quote, “At a sports award show, basketball stars Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul took the stage and talked about the issues in the world, as a Country we are having. This shows that there is more people out there that think the same, so we should fix it. In addition, Athletes weren’t always cheated good after they took a stand. In one of the articles, a piece of information also stated, “Smith and Carlos were stripped of their Olympic Medals, Muhammad Ali was banished from boxing for years for refusing to fight in the Vietnam war.”. It is wrong for them to be punished if they were really trying to help this country solve our problems. One more thing, Athletes didn’t always agree with each other. Here is a Quote from one of the Articles, “In 1968, Martin…

In the midst of the debate over our national morals, a key issue I wish for budding scholars to discuss is whether coaches should punish their players for kneeling during the national anthem. In my opinion, coaches have no right to “bench” their players for exercising their free speech; a liberty on which our nation was built. While it may be seen as disrespectful among the white majority of NFL coaches, to the players who fall victim to issues of police brutality and negligence by our current administration, they are using peaceful defiance to stand up for the lives they hold close. Who are we to criticize this resistance when it will eventually go down in history as martyrous? Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, and countless other athletes are…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

There are many other ways people can express the way they think about the whole situation. The athletes should spend time outside of being under the camera and make a difference in their community if they want change so bad. These athletes have an impact on adults and the youth on what they should believe in. Athletes should not be allowed to express their own beliefs during games as workers are not allowed to preach their beliefs to their customers.Should these athletes be using the platform such as the NFL, to promote the social injustices that the minorities are faced with in today's…

Athletic trainers evaluate, advise, and treat athletes to assist recovery from injury, or maintain peak physical fitness (“29-9091 Athletic Trainers”). During the 5th century, Herodicus of Megara (aka father of sports medicine) was the first to combine sports with medicine. After World War I (1916) trainers played a bigger role, and began to work at the college level. A year later (1917) Dr. S.E. Bilik wrote “The Trainers Bible” (“History of Athletic Training”). Now athletic training is more advanced with its requirements and qualifications, working conditions and salary, it's days you spend listening and learning, and its future needs and developments.…

On September 7, 2016, in Montgomery, West Virginia three athletes on the West Virginia University of Technology’s volleyball team mimicked professional athlete Colin Kaepernick and knelt during the national anthem. These girls, in an attempt to show their beliefs, crossed the boundary between standing for what they believed in and disrespecting the country in which they live. It is not only disrespectful to the country but also discourteous to the brave men and women who served our country. Many people die every day to preserve the rights given to us by this great nation, but we take for granted the rights that we have been given because most do not know what it is like to live without these rights. There are many other examples of other athletes disrespecting the Anthem. Professional athletes need to use their resources to educate American citizens about the equalities of life, not by disgracing the flag and the anthem which represent unity. This accomplishes the opposite of what they are trying to do. Instead of all life mattering they are perpetuating a racial division within our…

As the young and naive children we were, adults always told us to never give up on our dreams. This statement usually applied to the impractical dreams of becoming president of the United States, transforming into a superhero, or playing alongside professional athletes. These were all big ideas and aspirations that fueled our carefree childhoods, and were appropriate practice for shaping the paths to our true passions we discover later on in our lives; particularly in high school. High school is where teenagers are able experiment and begin to understand themselves as individuals, rather than what everybody else likes to do. Of course there are exceptions to those who are the “followers” rather than the “leaders”, but I’d like to claim I had…

Writer, Renaissance architect, humanist philosopher, and artistic theorist, Leon Battista Alberti is considered to be the Renaissance’s "universal man" of learning. In addition to painting, designing buildings, and writing scientific, artistic and philosophical treatises, Alberti wrote the first book on Italian grammar and cryptography. Born in Genoa in the year 1404, out of wedlock but immediately legitimatized by his father Lorenzo. Leon's mother, Bianca Fieschi, was a Bolognese widow. She died during an outbreak of plague. He was a member of an aristocratic and wealthy Florentine family of merchants and bankers that had been exiled from Florence for political reasons in 1377. Having grown up in the shadow of exile, he spent his life in continuous travels even after his family was allowed to return to Florence in 1428.…
