From The Editors’ Desk
SAMHITA
Dear Readers,

Greetings from the Team FIRE@X. We bring to you yet another edition of Samhita.

This edition has articles on some very thought provoking issues related to Industrial Relations.
“The hands that rock the cradle have the power to rule the world”, goes a famous saying but it is only off late that these hands have been given their due importance. Women have always been an underrepresented lot in almost all possible fields. But with the changing times, perceptions about women and their roles in the professional front has also changed and women are no longer being shunned from areas which were earlier considered taboo for them. On these very lines, we bring to you this month’s Samhita where the readers will get a chance to read about the impact that women can have on Industrial relations.
The issue has an insightful article by Adwitya on another important aspect of Industrial Relations, workers participation in management. The article brings to the light the pros and the cons of involving the workforce in decision making of organizations. Making for an interesting read in the issue is a take on the unionization of the unorganized by Akanksha Jain. We also bring to you a discerning take on the issue of Changing contexts and challenges for conciliators by Professor Jerome
Joseph.
This month’s issue features an interesting poetic representation of a union man apart from a crossword to tickle the grey cells of the readers.

    Decline of the Union

Unions were created with the everyday worker in mind, an opposite to the previous mindset where the employer ruled his employee and the employee had no recourse. Unions helped pave the way for many of the current rights we have in place for American workers today; such as the length of the workday and weekly hours, child labor laws, minimum salary requirements, workers compensation and safe working conditions. With so much advancement in the American workforce because of Unions, it is interesting that there is a steady decline in Union membership in America. There are many factors that contribute to the decline, such as change in workforce, outsourcing jobs, right to work states, economic interests and political opposition. Sadly though, a continuing decline combined with poor economic conditions could one day result in the loss of Union’s altogether, which could forever change the face of American labor. Union’s are a necessary component for the American laborer to protect their rights and protect them from the interests of industry. The threatening loss of Unions nationally threatens the rights of future laborer, which calls for immediate change to prevent this grave future.…
