an encounter with character
An Encounter with Character The word character is often mistaken for something it is not meant to be. Character to me, means that something or someone has a personality and that everything about it tells you all you need to know about it. It is a word that has little meaning now a days but when you experience something with real character you begin to see what the word’s true meaning is. I used to misconceive this word as well, until a few week back when I experienced something that had real character just down the road and just around the bend. I was on the bus ride home one day it was cold. I was shivering but I had gotten the seat with the heater so I took off my shoes and let the warm air of the heater send warmth through my freezing toes. I got off the bus and I started walking home when I heard it. It was a long high pitched noise like that of a dying animal and it sounded like it was coming from two houses away and across the street by the hills I never go to because I am not allowed to. I went inside and changed my shoes and put on a warm coat. I then went outside and began walking to the place where I could hear the noise coming from. I walked about a 50 feet away from my door when thoughts of doubt started to flood my mind “What if the noise was in my head and I came out into the cold for no reason?” I thought to myself I was about to turn around and go back inside but then I heard the noise again. I decided it was time to stop kidding myself and to go towards the sound. No matter how cold it was I would continue. I started on my way once more and I finally finished what should be a short and fun walk. I drew closer to the hills but the noise was gone. I decided I would search for 20 minutes. That would be my limit and if I didn’t find anything then I would turn around and go back home. I wanted to, but I had to find the source of that noise! If I didn’t find it than I would be so stupid to waste my time with silly noises in the hills, and I would

Characters play a big role in a story. As well as they all have flaws. For example, the narrator’s weakness is her boyfriend, Raheem. She does what he says because “A boy like him can get any girl he want, he ain’t gotta take stuff off nobody.’ As you can tell, Raheem’s strengths are his looks. With his “6 pack” and “honey” brown muscles, all the girls fall for him. Saying this, I don’t…

Characterization is the combination of all the things and author does to create the personality of a character in a piece of literature. For example, throughout the story, the read learns a lot about the character of Jack. We learn that he is a very determined young boy. He does not like to give up when he fails; he likes to keep going until he is successful. In the beginning of the novel, Ralph, Jack, and Simon come across a pig and Jack wants to kill it for meat. Jack attempts to kill it and fails, but he becomes very determined to kill one before they left the island. During chapter three, entitled "Huts on the Beach," Jack is once again not successful in the killing of the pig and becomes sad all over again. He stabs the pig but is unable to kill it. Throughout chapter seven, the boys are still trying to hunt down the pig but he gets away, once again. Finally, during chapter eight, the pig is finally killed. Jack becomes determined and awfully savage, killing the pig with his boys after torturing him continuously. (page 138) This proves the quote is valid because it shows that Jack kept failing along with the other boys, and his characteristic of determination kept him going until he learned from it and…

My character has always been an important concept within my life. This is because character is comprised of honesty, selflessness, and compassion. No matter what the situation is, it has always been imperative to me to be honest with not just those around me, but with myself. For example, I once noticed that an instructor had given me a higher grade than I deserved on a quiz, I never hesitated to report the mistake and made sure that my work was graded…

“Character is a set of behavior traits that define what sort of person you are. Your moral or ethical qualities if you like – qualities of honesty, courage, integrity, trustworthiness, respectfulness, responsibility, caring and compassion. People judge your personal character by their perception of how you respond to challenges. Someone who perseveres in the face of adversity and works persistently to complete a task or sees something through is generally thought to be someone of good character.” Once wrote Karon Graham.…

When most people think of character they often associate it with the idea of having to do the right thing. I on the other hand believe character is more than just doing what is morally righteous. Our experiences, obstacles and most importantly, passion define our true character. Passion establishes the difference between obligation or choice and giving up or persevering. Our actions result from the passion we choose to dedicate towards different aspects of our lives including school, work, extracurricular activities and community service. Everyone values these aspects differently and that is what allows for each of us to have our own unique character. I believe people have a more powerful influence when they have a true sense of passion for what they are doing.…

Character plays a role in who I am and who I seek to be. My parents taught me to be obedient and listen to others. At first, I thought being obedient means to follow rules so you would not get in trouble. In school, I would be the student who always followed the rules: no talking when the teachers talking, clean up after yourself, and finish your work at the proper time. Every year from kindergarten to middle school, I would get recognition…

Having character is being trustworthy, honest, empathetic and respectful. This means doing the right thing even when nobody's watching. I always search for the best in everyone because no one is perfect and we all have made poor decisions in our lifetime. I take responsibilities in my actions and others I am responsible for. It is difficult for me to admit that I am wrong but I still do because it is the right thing to do. I have had a friend who was suffering from depression and wanted to harm themselves. I was scared for them because depression is a disease and it is not their fault that they are like that. I had them speak to an adult and they are currently recovering. I was very scared that she had cut marks on her wrist because it could have gotten worst. I cried because I did not want to lose a friend. On a field trip, I found a five dollar bill on the pavement. I asked the first adult I saw who was slightly ahead of me if it was hers. She said that it must have dropped out of her purse when she was walking. The teacher was really surprised because she said I could have easily kept it for myself. I would feel bad if I took someone else’s money even if it was just lying…

For us to see the significance of the religious revivals known as the “Great Awakening,” we need to take a brief glance as to what caused it to happen. Going back into the 17th century, we will notice that fighting has ceased between political and religious leaders. This is due to the fact that the Church of England has come to establish a State religion. As a result of an establishment of a State religion, other religions such as Catholicism, Judaism and Puritanism were repressed. While having a State religion is a good idea for the political leaders, it created a dry, boring and complacent attitude among the citizens. Worshipping now became just an act. Going through the motions of worshipping, but not actually coming from the heart. This brings us to the spark of the “First Great Awakening,” which was the first of colonial America’s major religious revivals.…
