How does Huxely present this future society as something different to our own on the first page?:
Aldous Huxely expresses his idea of what a future society could be like and you can already see that there are major differences in this society just by reading the first page. The ideas are based largely around the concept of science being a way of life rather than an interest and where individuality, love and affection is frowned upon. The society mentioned in this book is “World State” and the people live by the motto “Community. Identity. Stability.” which suggests that the population depend on factories and science labs to create new life and use for employment. The infrastructure in the area is modern and similar to what we have today which is suggested by the line “A squat grey building of only thirty-four stories”.
The population is controlled by a genetically modified person who was genetically modified to be able to be rule over everyone else. In every society, there needs to be hierarchy, this is especially shown in this society as everyone is born for one reason only, slave labour. This society which hasn’t yet been named, worships everything on Henry Ford, the creator of mass production, in which they use his concept to mass produce people for slaves. Without a hierarchy, the world would be a dystopia instead of currently the controller’s Utopia. Therefore, by just reading the first page, you can clearly see that freedom, love, affection and attachment is frowned upon which shows that the society depicted by Huxley is very different to the one we currently live in.
