Each of the articles were notably different from each other based on the perspective the author took when discussing the usage of biofuels. In the first article, On the Horizon, Planes Powered by Plant Fuel, Author Matthew Wald reviews jet fuels, both alternative fuel based as well as petroleum based and the advantages and disadvantages of each. He established where he believes the issues lie and that is within the costs and land accessibility. The fruit jatropha is being used as biofuel to reduce petroleum usage. The plant proves to be quite efficient by reducing CO₂ emissions by as much as 60% but costs upwards of 2.5 times more than petroleum. Wald explains how the Department of Agriculture hopes to budget around $17 million to increase jatropha yields and to up the number of refineries for the production of fuels using the plant (Wald). This author’s perspective was that there is strong hope for the future of energy efficiency if we can boost the numbers of refineries and somehow bring the costs associated with biofuel production down.
Obama’s Pitch on Energy was the second article which went into detail about the amount of money the president plans to budget for the expansion of the use of biofuels. President Obama found that in order to appropriately address the greenhouse emission and dependence of foreign oil crisis, a budget of $6.7 billion was in order. The budget would cover certain things like better financing for the Department of Energy, more appropriate and necessary grants for renewable energy production and more elaborate and extended production for the wind industry (Obama's Pitch on Energy). The perspective taken by this author was that we need serious government intervention and spending to address the biofuel crisis. It is believed that increasing government funding will help reduce the negativities associated with petroleum use and increase the benefits of biofuels.
