An Example Of Athenian Democracy

Democracy: a system of government by the entire population or eligible citizens of a state, typically through elected representatives, according to the google definition. A prime example of democracy would be Britain, because the citizens possess the right to vote for the Parliament. Also, it isn’t nearly impossible to become a citizen in Britain. The requirements aren’t as harsh and a lot more citizens could vote, (foreigners who became citizens and women). I believe that ancient Athens was not democratic. They were in the direction, though it wasn’t a complete democracy. The reason Athens was not completely democratic was because there was an extremely little amount of people who could vote. Only male citizens had the opportunity to vote,
which adds up to 12%. A democracy is run by the majority of its members, and 12% is nowhere near the majority, although those are the only eligible. It wasn’t fair or equal (an example would be that women couldn’t vote), which is what democracy is all about. In ancient Athens, they couldn’t even enroll to be a citizen unless you were born from both citizen parents. Even if you have a clean record and are of the age, you couldn’t be a citizen if you weren’t citizen born. The Demokratia was run only by male citizens, meaning women, metics, and slaves had no say in how things should run. Instead of democracy, this would be oligarchy in modern day standards.
