An Explanation Of Dorothea Mackellar's Poem '
Dorothea Mackellar poem: Promises
I am facing back to front
Over my shoulder is the sun
Ahead is the clear blue sky
There is an open door
I know I can never walk through it
My line of sight ends again

I always have woolly hopes
Of forgetting all vows
Hopes are chance.
Chance are hopes. Though striving, however hard I try
Will always be little and insignificant

The path to freedom is paved with obstacles
It is made of hardship and broken promises
If we strive though, as hard as we can
The limit past the sky
Will we still fall to disgrace?
Patience and time is the ultimate decider,
If the promise in your head can live its time

Finally, a promise is a promise
Oath breakers did not heed the warning
Promises are continually being shattered

“Jessica Tunner, you have to be White! Can you imagine the shame our family will have to endure if you are not White?” My mother’s voice echoes in my ear or maybe it’s my mind. I wish I was an Electronics Master. I would find a way to remove or override the Communications Chip that had been implanted in my ear even before I was born. I could become some kind of rebel hero or Com Terrorist as the GOV likes to call them. Unlike my brother Gary, I barely meet the academic standards for electronics. My Assessment Data always end up in the satisfactory area, which is fine with me, because you won’t get to White by being satisfactory.…

Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

Certainly, one of the goblins’ treachery effects is the loss of the notion of time for Lizzie (V.449) and it previously happened to Laura (V.139). Despite having being attacked by wicked creatures, Lizzie walks home happily. The bouncing of the coin is like a victorious hymn for her, the proof that she has confronted and overcome temptation. She conserves her kind heart and thus her purity and vitality, which make her run home.…

The main theme of Snowbound is that no-matter what happens, family will be there to help and comfort. This theme is demonstrated widely throughout the poem and even more so in the last stanza of this excerpt. Another, less prominent, theme of Snowbound is the meaning and involvement of God in the lives of people.…

When we think we can't push anymore, we can push a little harder. When we think we're done, we're not. Our society has grown up under the impression that we aren't good enough, we're not strong enough, or we're not fast enough. So ever since I've heard that, I have pushed harder than I thought was possible, pushed past the limit. However at the same time it also personally impacts me because in the concentration camps they had to persevere, a lot. And I can relate a lot to perseverance because I have grown up swimming and the hard practices take a lot of perseverance. “Night” by Elie Wiesel teaches us all to persevere through the hard times and push ourselves past the limit. This is why I chose this…

DBQFrom 1781 to 1785 the Articles of Confederation provided the United States with an effective government. The main goal of the Articles was to allot as much independence as possible to the states compared to the idea of a central government for fear of conflict with Britain. Despite the many advantages of its systematic rule it did not provide enough power to the Congress in order for them to adequately control commerce, land expansion and regulate taxes. This was very expected since the Articles of Confederation were a starting point and this article was used to persuade individual states to adopt a more powerful form of government in the future.…

Every human struggles everyone has hardship. When I was young I began to notice that maybe it is hard to understand what other people struggle with. The start of a mundane life began as usual a bus ride to school, but today something else happened a flash of yellow a soundless luxury sports car zoomed bass by a Lamborghini. As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. I began to wonder when will I get one with imaginary job I will live the high life. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…
