An In-Depth View of Melissa Hershey Melissa is a 7-year-old girl, the middle child of two siblings. She appears as a very active and independent child, with interests that lie outside of schoolwork. Her parents have been separated for two years, and had a tumultuous relationship prior to the separation. Melissa’s mother, Amy, appears to be distant with low involvement in her daughter’s life, while her father has had no contact with the family since leaving. Amy used marijuana while pregnant, and although Melissa suffered a seizure at 4 years old, she now appears to be relatively physically healthy. This suggests that she may be aware of a particular answer, but lacks the confidence to state her response unless qualified through appearing as an option on the test. Her ability to recall facts is much greater than her abstract reasoning, again supporting the idea that she lacks the confidence to discuss her thinking and feels more comfortable stating a simple known fact, than an opinion of her
