(A Study of First Semester of Postgraduate English Students’ Reading Strategies in UPI)

ABSTRACT
Reading is a tool to get information and knowledge from texts. But it is quite difficult for the student to comprehend it well. It needs strategies that may expose students in enhancing their reading comprehension. This study attempts to investigate the cognitive direct strategies employed by the students of the first semester of English Post-graduate students of Indonesia University of Education (UPI). The study conducted a qualitative research design. In selecting the participants purposive random sampling was used to select 25 participants got involved in this study. The questionnaire and interview were employed to collect the data and the data were analyzed descriptively to find out using cognitive strategies of the students in reading comprehension. The result of the study indicated that in general, the participants have applied the cognitive reading strategies to enhance their comprehension. It was obviously shown from the total average score of questionnaire was generally used by the students consciously or subconsciously. Summarizing was the most widely categories in cognitive strategies which usually used. Taking notes, on the other hand, was the least level of frequency use by the participants. In other words, it could be concluded that the students are familiar with these cognitive strategies and have applied them in comprehending reading materials.
