An Ode To America By Larry Norman
America; Land of The Diverse What it means to be an American is an incredibly subjective question. Millions of people worldwide have their own definition, which has been developed over countless years and diverse experiences. My own definition was developed through multiple exemplary sources, an extremely beneficial one being the song, “The Great American Novel,” by Larry Norman. In the song, Norman states many attributes of America, such as the fact that this wonderful country was once a limitless and beautiful land, a land that was made into a home through many years of hard work, struggle, and perseverance. Yet, this song also describes the values which have decreased throughout the years. Per contra, the other most impactful statement …show more content…
“An Ode to America,” written by Cornel Nistorescu, talks about the events following the 9/11 bombings. He writes how amazed he was at the unity the Americans showed just hours after the disaster. Flags were raised, fundraisers started, and lives risked all in the name of standing together and supporting one another. Even celebrities hosted benefit concerts to raise money for those affected. “Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, and the secret service that they are only a bunch of losers. The Americans volunteered to donate blood and give a helping hand.” This entire editorial nearly brought my humble heart to tears- Americans, in a time of great need, found the love and the unity to lend a helping hand wherever needed. This is not the only example of Americans taking a stand together- our nation is being struck with hurricane after hurricane, yet the American people have shown that, despite storms getting stronger, Americans are still the strongest. More than 20 million dollars were raised for Hurricane Harvey relief. Centuries of our history will expressthe same thing- Americans are a united people. In America Under Attack it is explained that some Americans became so motivated by the service the volunteers that they decided to enlist in the military service, hoping to help protect the United States. This is an example of how much people’s lives were affected from the attacks, that people were inspired to serve their country and to help keep an event like this from happening again. In America’s history there has been an extreme presentation of nationalism, especially in the Pearl Harbor and 9/11 attacks. December 7, 1941, a date that resonates in the hearts of all Americans, was the day the Japanese Navy landed a surprise attack on the U.S naval base at Pearl Harbor. The USS West Virginia was one of the ships that sunk in during the assail, also claiming over 2000 innocent lives. Pearl Harbor was known as the worse attack on American ground by foreign assailants until 9/11. Not very long after the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001, the nation descended into a period of lament. We felt intense sorrow, but the anguish that we held was partly filled by a nationalistic dedication.…

In this day and age, to be American is something frequently mocked. With all the stereotypes, it makes us wonder what it truly means to be American. Does it mean to be fat and unhealthy? Greedy and demanding? Racist and Harsh? This is the brand we are all marked with as a whole nation, but I reject these labels. To be an American is something we should be proud of.
