How do the works of Yasumasa Morimura, Julie Rrap and Anne Zahalka challenge conventional ways in which gender has been depicted historically in the visual arts?…
There are many factors that can determine gender identity. There is continuous research comparing the affect of both biology and environment on gender identity. Gender identity is almost always chromosomal sex although that isn't enough to rule out the affect of environment. Intersexuals are rare individuals who posses the typical external genitalia while possessing ambiguous sexual organs of the other sex. There are also hermaphrodites who possess both testicular and ovarian tissue. These two factors that determine gender identity are caused by hormonal factors in prenatal development. Hermaphrodites usually assume the gender identity of the sex assignment at birth. A sex assignment is the process of determining the sex of a child at birth. Intersexualism has given scientists a chance to compare environment and biology. Intersexualism means a person possesses a whole, either male or female reproductive organs. They also possess internal or external tissue of the other sex.…
In “There is No Unmarked Woman” by Tannen, she focuses on the analysis of women and how women are subjected to prejudice and judgment based by the way they dress. Tannen discusses in her paper the struggles that women go through, how they are seen throughout the media and examining the fact that women are subject to harsher judgement for every action taken or choice made. She shows this through specific examples and past experiences.…
For about twenty-two years now, women in the city of Juarez have been struggling with the violence that is happening around them. Women who live in this city have to live their lives with the fear of one day being sexually abused and killed by criminals. The political meaning behind this piece is that by giving awareness to this cause the artist can help support the cause of the victims who’s crimes have not been resolve. This also helps give the families of the victim some comfort because the artist is sending the message that people should be aware of the injustices that are happening around them and to help support this cause because only then these families can grieve in…
Frida Kahlo was a strong revolutionary female artist that emerged out of Mexico during its time of turmoil and growth. By examining her unique upbringing as a child, to her outlook on Mexico’s quest to situate an national identity to their masses without any influences from European ideologies, I feel that Frida Kahlo was an early feminist that help pave the way for women in Mexico to achieve equal opportunities, not only in a cultural sense but also political. She was able to express her aesthetic views through portraits depicting social and cultural taboos that were still plaguing the Mexican women after the socialist and muralist movements.…
Usually when a person is said to be male or female, it is based on their sex assigned to them at birth, specific natal characteristics are used to define a person a boy or a girl. These biological features are not the only determining factor regarding gender identity. An individual’s psyche also has a significant role.…
Since my very first English class back in elementary, I was taught how to use pronouns. The thing about pronouns is that you need to know the sex of the person you are trying to talk about. The pronouns “he or she”, in English terms, is not an acceptable manner to use for both genders. But what if we were to be considerate to other’s opinions and personal views on gender identity? What if we let go of the need to contemplate on how to identify them?…
Environmental influences primarily the way we react to our caregiver, friends and family and during the development stage will have an effect on the way a person acts later on in life. When discussing biological foundations of gender identity; it is imperative not to emphasized physical sexual differentiation to the exclusion of socio- environmental factors. Although the best way of deciding sexual identity is still sex assignment at birth for long term gender identity…
Gender identity and the process by which children come to learn more about themselves has been a strongly debated topic as of late, especially due to our recent election and repeals of various bills and laws that were put into effect in order better protect children identifying as art of the LGBT community. However, gender policing negatively affects children with cis-het identities as well, especially through the “sex-category sorting process” observed by Michael Messner. Gender segregation and reinforcement of traditional gender roles is common in our current society. Although society enforces arbitrary gender rules, this continuous gender policing negatively affects society, especially youth. As long as younger generations are confined by rigidly traditional upbringings, gendered language and…
Genderqueer, also termed non-binary, is a catch-all category for gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine—identities which are thus outside of the gender binary and cisnormativity. Genderqueer people may identify as one or more of the following:…
What if someone wasn’t allowed to be themself? How might that make them feel? Gender identity is important to learn about because it helps to understand how one develops a different gender identity, so people can understand what gender identity actually is, and so that they don’t have to live in fear of discrimination for being of the opposite gender.…
I identify as a white, middle class, male-gendered ripple on this quasi-spatial persistent illusion we call life. As a member of the dominant group (at least in these categories) it is difficult to tease out the precise moments of acute realization that I “belonged” to any of these groups. Rather, it seems like I exist in the way things have always been: in the way my life was always meant to be. Nonetheless, the following is my attempt to unearth the scaffoldings that molded me towards this set of identities and to expose the ways in which my pathway through engineering has been (and will be) altered by them.…
Throughout life, gender was not something I thought about, I think it would cross my mind from time to time but it is not something that I have thought deeply about. I would definitely say that my gender was assumed based on my biological label as a female. Growing up, I was a complete tomboy, you could always find me outside or playing sports. I think over the years I have pick up aspects of the other gender like watching sports, enjoying the outdoors and being able to do handy stuff around the house. All these aspects are considered to be characteristics that are associated with a male. I remember people used to point out to my mom that I was going to grow up tough because I liked playing sports like softball, hockey and soccer. I think I…
Gender identity is an individual's personal, the sense of being male or female. Gender identity starts to begin in most children by the age of 3. Although most societies define gender as male and female, many cultures may define gender as neither male or female. Sex refers to biological differences between male and female. The same sex hormone occur in both male and female, but differ in amounts and in the effects that they have upon different parts of the body for example, chromosomes (female XX, male XY), hormones (oestrogen, testosterone). According to the social cognitive theory of gender, children's gender development occurs through being rewarded and punished for gender-appropriate and gender-inappropriate behaviors. From birth male and…
