Ana Menendez's In Cuba I Was A German Shepherd
Hello,
I have chosen “‘In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd” by Ana Menendez short story because the name of it attracted me. Shortly it is about four Cuban men who immigrated after the revolution to Miami. It expresses their home sickness. Although I read hundreds of short stories, it is my first to force myself to read this story; I really don’t like it anymore for several reasons.
Firstly, The writer depended on the hidden meanings, especially when she described the desire of the people to end the authoritarian government of Cuba, with Maximo’s joke “ Máximo continued, "Clinton goes up to a Cuban fellow and says, `Compadre, how are things in Cuba these days?' The guy looks at Clinton and he says to the president, `Let me tell you, my friend,

Out of the three stories that we have read the most engaging in my opinion was ‘The Chosen Vessel". The short story written by Barbra Baynton deals with topics like superstition and religion, showing the deadly outcomes of these themes. These themes first caught my attention as it is something that differentiates for many people depending on when and where you are. I was interested in the religious history of Australia and really liked how Baynton told the story of Australian religious history through her narrative.…

In Christina Garcia's, Dreaming In Cuba, we read about three generations of a Cuban family torn apart by their environment. Political turmoil force the del Pino family to split and cause animosity amongst each other. It is centered on the complicated relationships and bonds between mother and daughter. Garcia expresses the story in a mixture of first and third person narration. This method paints a portrait to show the diverse mother-daughter relationship, allowing readers a multi-view perspective of not only bonds but also complications. The mothers of the story are portrayed to be the villains by their own daughters. We see this through three generations, Celia, her daughter Lourdes, and Lourdes daughter, Pilar. Interactions between mother and daughter headline the majority of the dialogue in Garcia's story. However, the fathers of the story are in the background and respected by their daughters. The story doesn't give too much insight on Lourdes father, Jorge or Pilar's father, Rufino. It's as if the most influential parents are despised, while the fathers are praised. Pilar, the protagonist, travels down a similar road her mother traveled. Pilar wants to be nothing like her mother.…

Another interesting story was “Anguiano Religious Articles”. This was a very creatively written story which not only utilized a large amount of cultural depictions and imagery, but it was also very religiously humorous. Told from the perspective of a woman, the story describes her hatred toward a store owner. Before journeying to the store, she is told that this store owner is a “crab ass”. The story is very short, but humorous…

Celia del Pino is the character that the novel begins with as she is the oldest in this family line, she represents the old, conservative world of Cuba and her perspective creates a contrast to the experiences and feelings of her children and grandchildren. The novel starts off with Celia in order to set the time period and to represent the conservative viewpoint of a Cuban during the reign of Fidel Castro. Celia, “equipped with binoculars” and “wearing her best house dress” sits in her “whicker chair” guarding the “north coast of Cuba”(3). These opening lines of the novel illustrate how Celia loves Cuba and wants to protect her country from any further invasion or war. She represents the first generation as she remembers the Cuban Missile Crisis very vividly. She even goes on to say how she sees no sign of “gusano traitors” and that she could spot another “Bay of Pigs invasion” before it even happened(3). This reference to this famous historical event epitomizes the characterization of Celia and the generation she represents. She represents the generation who is for the revolution and the dictator Fidel Castro, and would probably be very against the fact that part of…

In 2004, you’d often see a five-year-old perched on her father’s lap as they rested on a leather couch while they read from a children’s story book called, “La Edad De Oro.” The father would read to her the pages in fluent Spanish as she struggled to read along, often giving up to simply listen to her father’s soothing voice as she became entranced with the plot. Dark brown eyes glimmering with excitement as she wondered what the mother would say to the daughter that gave away her zapaticos de rosa. That five-year-old that would always beg her father to read a passage from “La Edad De Oro” was me thirteen years ago. If I were only allowed to read five pieces of literature to children, I would choose five passages from the Cuban book “Habia una Vez” that have even taught me important life lessons to keep close to my heart.…

I was most drawn to “Mericans” as the story provokes a gratitude of thought, displays the rawness of cultural diversity through the Mexican church and resonates with the innocence of childhood through the eyes of Micaela. The author, Cisneros, brings to life the full reality of the livelihood of Mexican Americans through this story. In “Mericans” we are offered an opportunity to look inside the family dynamics of a Mexican family and how they are often misunderstood through their custom. We are also afforded the opportunity to visualize a church that plays a cornerstone in their culture. This literary display is why I feel that the story “Mericans” is the best choice for nomination.…

The short story that I chose was "The story of an hour by Kate Chopin. The story is about Mrs, Mallards sister Josephine telling her about her husbands death. Mrs, Mallard took the death very hard, and was very depressed for sometime. Her husband Brently was in a railroad accident, and his friend Richard was in the newsroom when he read the list of the men who lost their life. When she found out she wanted to be alone, and asked that no one followed her up into her room. She would stare out the window and just look out at the view. She smells the trees, and hears a peddler screaming out. She is taking the death of her husband very hard.…

It just happens that the author uses Felicia’s story to not only make a comment that is relevant to the identity of Felicia, but rather a comment that reflects the identities of all the characters and that can be applied to all of our lives. Garcia is using the stories of her characters to make a statement on the idea of identity. Garcia’s depiction of Felicia’s death mimics how one’s identity can be irregular and undefined. Garcia’s inclusion of the death of Felicia allows her to add layers of meaning to the novel. Garcia uses the death of Felicia to symbolize the novel’s theme of uncertainty and irregularity in identity. The author uses Felicia’s story to make a comment on how identities are always going to be distorted or tainted in a way, and that there is no such thing as a perfect identity. All in all, Foster’s ideas in his chapter “It’s Never Just Heart Disease...And Rarely Just Illness” are relevant in the novel Dreaming in Cuban as author Cristina Garcia uses disease and death to paint a revitalized picture of identity in addition to making a strong statement on the idea of uncertainties in…

The most interesting short stories that caught my undivided attention were: “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” by Robert Olen Butler. These stories were both fascinating and intriguing in the sense that they made me feel like if I was the actual character. You could feel the pain and anguish the characters felt, even the desperation. It got to a point that I felt pity for the protagonist whom in both stories where narrating. Here we can see how someone can feel so desperate that they think the only way out is by taking their lives. Both Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Robert Olen Butler created an incredible form of fiction that makes you question if the scenes in the stories can truly happen in reality.…

Arenas writes this book through his imaginations and pastimes in Cuba as if it were his diaries. He analyzes his secrecy with artistic writing and sex. Reinaldo Arenas says, My sexual activity was all with animals. First there were the hens, then the goats and the sows, and after I had grown up some more, the mares (Arenas 149).” This shows the indifference towards women and the rest of the societies interests. In other words, Reinaldo was a homosexual and hid through his fear of the totalitarian government by taking his pain out with the animals. This book represents Reinaldo’s search for…

When I read “Stella by Starlight”, I saw many examples of racism in plain daylight. Racism is no longer legal in corporations themselves (private organizations are allowed to discriminate, but not against the basis of race), but in individual people it happens all the time, and we hear about it on the news constantly. Why does this occur? What can make somebody actually think that race can make somebody inferior to you? I think it is ignorance.…
