The Declining Integrity of Sports
INTRODUCTION
Athletics have shaped the American society for centuries. While whites previously dominated a majority of sports, now members of all races and ethnicities have equal opportunity to succeed in the sports world. With this increase in athletes, also arises a heightened level of competition. Numerous athletes are now relying on performance enhancing drugs to better themselves in their sports. Many athletes use these drugs to increase their running and strength abilities. These Anabolic steroids are substances that give athletes a lean, shredded look (“Steroids”618). Nature supplies the minerals and proteins found in most “natural steroids. Natural steroids are not as effective as anabolic steroids, thus they have not yet been banned, though they’re frowned upon as a form of cheating. “In today’s world, athletes who are determined to cheat know that natural substances are the way to go” (Johnson 38). Anabolic steroids are frequently used in major sports and professional weight championships, and have been seriously banned in every major athletic league. Mark McGwire shattered Roger Maris’s homerun record, in 1998 after crushing an amazing seventy homeruns. In following years, allegations proved that McGwire had used these drugs to gain more force and distance from his hits. McGwire was once believed to be a baseball superstar, but is now forever characterized as a liar and a cheater. A similar scenario occurred in 2001 when Barry Bonds hit seventy-three homeruns in a single season. He later cheated his way into becoming the all-time homerun king with 762 homeruns over his career, which shot him beyond Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth. Bonds’ titles were stripped after it came to light that he had used Human Growth Hormones (HGH), a usual strain of anabolic steroid that severely duplicates muscle development and stimulation. Steroids are not only un-ethical, but tend to harm more athletes in the long run. Steroids increase the height of blood pressure and significantly decrease the heart rate, leading to heart failure and even death.
