DB SCHENKER
1. HISTORY & EVOLUTION
DB SCHENKER is a German company originally founded on 1872 in Vienna, Austria, by Gottfried Schenker with the name of Schenker & Company. It is classified as a forwarding company.
Its first operations were undertaken to link Paris with Vienna aimed to fulfil make possible the luxury desires of the high Vienna’s society; a year later this route grew to become an excellent way to transport all kind of items between both cities [Martin Murray, 2014].
In 1901, the company expanded across 13 European Countries opening more than 30 different branches. New York was the first non-European country conquered by the company.
In 2000 the company was acquired by Deutsche Bahn Company which changed its the name to DB Schenker. The company focused its services on two levels of ambition: delivering to everywhere by all forms of transport and offering a high quality logistics service [Martin Murray, 2014]
444881054737000Several companies were purchased to expand its empire and became a leader position in the entire work company´s field: in 2002, Deutsche Bahn Stinnes AG, in 2009, English Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS), in 2005, Bax Global, in 2008, Tranfesa and Romtrans [Martin Murray, 2014].
Nowadays, DB SCHENKER has more than 90,000 employees (25.000 Freight Rail) working in more than 2000 locations in over 130 countries, obtaining a total revenue of 20 Billion Euros (5 Billion in Freight Rail) and working with 4,200 clients [Martin Murray, 2014].
Although DB SCHENKER owns so many terminals all over the world, it is headquartered from two main places, Doncaster (England) and Mainz (Germany).
The chairman position is employed by the Dr. Karl Friedrich Ramsh, although then there are two sub positions in each main area of the company; on the Freight Rail side Dr. Alexander Hedderich and on the Logistics solutions side Dr. Thomas Lieb [Martin Murray, 2014].
