Effects on the immediate families There have been a lot of effects on the immediate families. This occurs when the parent’s i.e. fathers and/or mothers are arrested due to different criminal offences, their immediate families become traumatized by the community and the media based on a rush to judgment. The children of these parents are ridiculed by other children who attend the same school. These children undergo many antagonizing reactions including anger, depression, low self-esteem, and a decline in school performance.

This has shown that there is a high probability of Children to enter the juvenile justice system if one parent is incarcerated than those children without parental incarceration. This has made the incarcerated children to run away from their homes, schools and they end up in the streets or rooming the village without any productive work. This leads to the society paying the price since these incarcerated children are not productive as their talents and abilities are lost to the vicious cycle of anger, addiction, and incarceration.
Fear to the community
There has been a tendency whereby many people tend to have a wrong impression on the convicts especially those that have been involved in serious cases like murder and forced robbery. The community where this convicts reside tend to develop a fear of them and this tend to lead many citizen avoiding any business or any deals with them because of the fear that they might be in the process of committing another criminal act.
