School work can also suffer as young children cannot concentrate and loose all motivation this could lead to them dropping out of school and develop antisocial behavior.
Aspirations &expectations as children become older choices are made that influence whether their potentialities are developed. These choices are influenced by their parents, the opportunities available to them, and their own aspirations to gain qualifications, to * Get a job, to have a career * To have a family. Although children’s aspirations change throughout childhood they are shaped by the characteristics of their families, peers, schools, and the environment they live in. Living in a poor household leads parent to become depressed and their children develop feeling that their lives cannot be changed, this can lead to a lack of motivation which effects all areas of a child’s development.

There are many influences which can affect a child’s development, personal factors include influences before and at birth, health status and disabilities, sensory impairments and learning difficulties. Genetics affect a child’s development at conception where the sperm and egg determine sex, height and eye colour. If the genetics are faulty this can affect the child’s health and development. During pregnancy the mother needs to ensure that she does not smoke, drink or use drugs, all of these things are made up of toxins which can severely harm the baby which in turn can cause complications at birth and possible delayed development later on in life. Genetics can also cause addiction, depression and low self-esteem if these problems run in the family. Difficulties throughout the labour such as anoxia (lack of oxygen) can cause difficulties for development. If a child is born with a condition or develops one later on in life this may affect their development. For example, a child with uncontrolled asthma or cystic fibrosis may not be able to run around and be as active as their peers. Therefore, this would mean that their physical development might not be the same, not being able to play outside would almost certainly affect their social development, as children make many friendships on the playground and at after school clubs. A child in a wheelchair or with a serious physical impairment would find it hard to do many activities, particularity those that are physically demanding. Gross motor skills would be at a less developed rate than peers and fine motor skills may be affected if the child had little or no control over their limbs. A child with learning problems may be many developmental years behind their peers; this will have a big impact on what they can do in all areas of development including physical skills, social skills and intellectual skills. They may find…

If children are exposed to the notion that they shouldn’t be successful or that they aren’t capable of achieving success they sometimes grow up to meet those expectations. For instance Indians aren’t expected to be highly educated and successful people, “We were Indian children who were expected to be stupid (Superman and Me).” Indian children aren’t expected to be successful in the non-indian world. Meanwhile children who are expected and encouraged to overcome stereotypes and obstacles to become the very best that they can be are often able to accomplish success. For example if teachers encourage students to push themselves to advance their reading it may just be the motivation they need, “I very tentatively suggested that, since she was a skillful rider and loved horses, she might like to read National Velvet...She tried it, and though she must have found it quite a bit harder than what she had been reading, finished it and liked it very much ( How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading).” By encouraging his student to push her limits he became a role model and a source of motivation, and by doing so she was able to advance her reading and later was confident enough to attempt reading Moby-Dick. “My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well ( Superman and Me).”…

The future development and maintenance of the world is in the hands of the children at present. These children will grow up to be our politicians, doctors and accountants. However these very prestigious positions aren’t just handed out like ice cream. Only a selective group of people possess the qualities to achieve these occupations, mainly consisting of children growing up in a relatively medium to high socioeconomic and loving family. This secure and supportive upbringing stabilises the child’s mental development by providing consistent education (school) and domestic learning skills. However children that are deprived of this (i.e. orphans) go through much tougher experiences and don’t mentally develop the same as others because they are not given the same opportunities. The issue of relative loss due to ill health or accident can put a barrier between a child’s mind and a healthy mental development. Also children that move country are cognitively halted due to the fact that they have to ‘catch up’ with new languages and culture.…
