In Chapter 8, the author talks about as globalization came along, major cities and capitals became “world cities” , meaning that they linked more internationally than locally. For instance, the author mentions that Miami interacts more with Sao Paulo than the cities that are closer by like Orlando. But not all major cities are “world cities”, but that does not mean they do not have an influence on the power of place. Big cities attract markets, talented people, learning centers, and etc. Although much of the world today is globalized, it began with human communities that grew into villages and slowly formed into urbanized societies. Globalization has linked nations together, and globalization and urbanization will continue on in the power of…

A world city is a large city that has outstripped its national urban network and has become part of an international global system. They have become powerful nodal points for the multiplicity of linkages, and interconnections that sustain the contemporary world economies, social and political systems. The result is a new world system of cities acting as ‘organising nodes’. In other words, they link regional, national, and international economies into the global economy, and this assists their main role as powerful centres of economic and cultural authority. These world cities are dominated by TNC’s which are part of an international global system, and these corporations select regional cities as strategic centres from which to extend their influence within the global economy. The growth of world cities is facilitated by increasing telecommunication networks and improvements in technology, and the links of air transport between world cities.…

The Poles who were West Slavic people established Poland in the late 5th century. History was first written in the 10th century about Poland when the Polish nation changed into Christianity in 966. Prince Mieszko I was the first ruler and his son, Boleslaw I, was the first king of Poland. This established the Piast dynasty that lasted from 966 to 1370. During the Piast dynasty there where Piast kings with a lot of rivalries from nobility and Bohemian and Germanic invasions that made Poland a very troubled country. The last king of the dynasty was Casimir III, crowned in 1333. He extended Polish influence eastward to Lithuania and Russia. He acquired Pomerania from the Teutonic Knights and shifted borders between Poland and Germany. During his 37-year reign a university was established, laws were made more organized, castles grew strong, and minority groups were given protection (Grolier).…

It is a well-known fact that the world is becoming increasingly urbanized. In almost every country in the world the trend has been for more and more people to move from small towns to larger cities. Although there are certain aspects of living in small town that I would appreciate such as clean air and less noise, however the urbanizing trend pretty much reflects my own preference for living in a big city rather than in a small town, because in my opinion the place one lives in plays more important role in one’s life in terms of wider range of opportunities. I think the education and career opportunities are the most prominent among them.…
