Analysing a Journal Article Using Qualitative Research Method
When doing research nurses have come up with theories to expand nursing practice and these theories help ideas to be composed. Theory backs and puts forward research problems, research discoveries confirm or disprove theory explanations, as stated by Borbasi and Jackson, (2012).The research article that I have chosen for this assignment is from International Journal of Nursing Practice. It is a qualitative study that was written by King and Walsh, (2007) and the topic is ‘I think PCA is great, but …’ – Surgical nurses’ perceptions of patient-controlled analgesia .According to by Borbasi and Jackson, (2012) research has five phases namely: conception stage, design the study, conduct the study, analyse the study and use the study .This essay will identify five phases in their order, analysing how the research was done and explain how it embraces all these five stages.
The first phase deals with the identification of the problem, review the literature, develop theoretical framework and formulate valuables as stated by Borbasi and Jackson, (2012). In this article by King and Walsh, (2007) the problem that was identified was that previous research examined patients’ experiences with and how they understand PCA (intravenously patient-controlled analgesia) was more readily available but not enough research majored on how patient controlled analgesia (PCA) works from the nurse’s viewpoint. This qualitative research study scrutinised surgical nurse’s awareness of patient controlled analgesia as a good approach for handling pain in a tertiary care hospital. It outlines and explores relation between nurse and patient, the experience of nurses, how nurses practice, patient control and patient’s experiences. The literature review highlights what is already known about the subject that is under research, what other research findings were related to the same or similar study .It shows what is already known about that study, it also shows how information that relates to the
