Ads use a variety of techniques to attract readers’ attention and convince them that the product advertised is the best they can get.
This advertisement of Camel cigarettes was feature in Glamour Magazine. It features a photograph of a Caucasian woman that seems to be in her mid-twenties. This woman is beautiful and appears to have flawless skin. She is holding a lit cigarette in her hand and is blowing out cigarette smoke from her mouth. This image suggests that smoking Camel Cigarettes will make you beautiful and have flawless skin. It also makes smoking cigarettes seem like it’s no big deal. I believe this advertisement leads to the appeal to the need for attention. In “Advertising’s The Fifteen Basic Appeals” by Jib Fowles He states that “The previous need involved being looked up to, while this is the need to be looked at.”(343). I feel like this quote fits the article best is because people see this ad that shows an attractive younger women who is smoking and So the younger individuals who are viewing this article is being showed that Camel Cigarettes implies that their product can fix those problems, just as it is doing for the beautiful woman in the advertisement. In this camel cigarette ad they use the quote “Inspiration is where a moment becomes a memory,” I believe this leads to the appeal the need to escape, because it shows this woman appears to be having a moment of serenity to herself. And it shows that people should embrace what’s now and live in the present, and Camel Cigarettes will help them do so. In Fowles article he states “freedom is the pitch here, the freedom that every individual yearns for whenever life becomes too oppressive. Many advertisers like appealing to the need for escape because the sensation of pleasure often accompanies escape” (345). I believe that this quote describes the appeal the need to escape because the nicotine in these cigarettes relives stress and anxiety, it gives you that escaping feel from those feelings and that’s why many people smoke.
I also feel as if this articles is showing the need to aggress. In fowles article he says that “The pressure of the real world creates strong retaliatory feeling in every functioning human being.” (341). so when people get pressured they feel stressed and the nicotine in the cigarettes help relive that feeling and that is a reason why a lot of people smoke. Also if you hang around a group of people who smoke you may feel the pressure you need to smoke because you see others doing it.
This advertisement leads to the appeal to the need to satisfy curiosity as well. Because when articles like this come out many young viewers see it and they see many other people around them doing it there going to think this is the cool thing to do. Especially with slogans they show in these articles. It doesn’t have a good impact on young kids. Because they see it and they try it then they get addicted to it and that can cause many health problems at a young age. “Human beings are curious by nature, interested in the world around them, and intrigued by tidbits of knowledge and new developments” (346). Says Fowles. The advertisers make these ads because they know people are naturally curious and are going try them one point.
