Easy, Breezy, Beautiful CoverGirl- Natureluxe Foundation
CoverGirl succeeds once again and captures it’s viewers in an advertisement that not only has a modern way of catching its viewers’ attention, but also uses competition and catchy phrases to woo it’s viewers into buying their brand over other competing commericals. This specific commercial advertises CoverGirls Natureluxe Silk foundation using Taylor Swift. She is a perfect person to use in a commercial that is marketing their product towards teen girls. At only 22, Taylor has made a lucrative career out of writing songs about growing up and discovering yourself. Throughout the commercial she glows, she looks happy and completely natural throughout the entire thing. It’s as if she doesn’t even have make up on and it’s captivating. Plenty of young girls throughout the country look up to her for this reason. They feel like they can relate to her realistic life situations she puts into her music and because of that they are more likely to sway towards what her opinion of everyday things are such as make up as it is clearly shown in the advertisement.
Another factor that I believe CoverGirl used to catch its readers attention would be how the actual foundation bottle is made. They put it in a light green bottle that has darker green swirls extending throughout it. Green is naturally a peaceful color. We associate green with trees, leaves, and nature which is the main catching point of Natureluxe as it is made with green extracts and other natural plants. I think they used green to give it that effect on its buyers.
While CoverGirl does do a good job choosing the print on the Natureluxe foundation bottle I also noticed the colors they used throughout the commercial. They don’t use any dark colors- instead, they use white, light blue, and light green to give the advertisement a bright and relaxing feel which is really important for this product

    Carrie Underwood has many famous songs, one of which being "All-american Girl", which is included in this advertisement and phrases can be heard in the background such as “his heart belongs to that sweet, little, beautiful, wonderful, perfect All-American girl”. Hearing these words can create a sentimental feeling for many women as they envision a little girl growing up with a strong bond to her father as she meets the ups and downs of life.     First screen shows the words Jennifer Garner for Neutrogena in all gray. This commercial stars Jennifer Garner who is wearing a white blouse and in the background is an all white room. Jennifer starts off by asking “Does your moisturizer protect your face Against (in blue) the environment?” There is guitar music in the background. She mentions the things on the environment that can affect your skin like the sun, pollution (picture of a city), cold (trees covered in snow), wind (tree blowing in the wind) and indoor heat (heating vent). “Introducing Neutrogena Multi-defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 15” (shows bottle) Bottle is white with a gray lid the word are all gray except Multi-defense that’s blue.     I believe that the definition of elitist and populist has changed significantly throughout the years. Populist is still revolved around patriotism, bright colors, and country setting. Elitist is still circled around elegance and wealth. But the way that they both are interpreted by Americans has changed. With advertisements being about behavior modification instead of selling products, it has changed what Americans want and need. They want to be like the leaders and powerful people of the country but they also want to fit in. Advertisements show audiences what they could be like and they should want to be like if they want to fit in with the crowd. Posture is a significant change in advertising today. Solomon describes how eye contact is a huge contribution in whether an ad is elite or not, “Advertisers have been quick to exploit the status signals that belong to body language as well” (169), but posture over time has clearly proven that it a great representation on either populist or elitist. You can still tell the difference of whether an advertisement is elitist or populist in todays’ advertisements. The sign of a good advertisement is that the culture has illusion over reality (Solomon 176). The Covergirl advertisement is a well representation of being elitist. It has the dark colors, formal black clothing, and a solid colored background. The title also sounds elitist because of its use of the word superpowers. It shows that this product will make you a more powerful person if you own it. Manipulation is snuck into the advertisement by putting a popular face as the spokesperson for Covergirl.
