Analysis Of Élisabeth Louise Vorlée's Painting 'Madame Grand'
This painting is called Madame Grand (Noël Catherine Vorlée, 1761–1835) and it is oil on canvas. The artists name is Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (French, Paris 1755–1842 Paris). It is a representational painting of a lady is sitting on what looks like a chair and is looking off and up to her right. She has a giant blue ribbon on the top of her hair that matches the bow on the front of her dress. She looks as if she is thinking of something that will make her happy or as if she was looking out the window because there is a light coming from where she is looking. On her wrist that is showing it looks as if she has a bracelet but when you zoom in it actually apart of her dress and it is silky. She is not wearing any jewelry that is visible. …show more content…
The way she is looking to right could be where the pianist is located or whomever is there with her and she is in the midst of a song. When looking at the painting I would say her weight is facing more towards the inside of the chair like she is leaning into something. The balance as a whole of the lady sitting in the chair is positioned just right and how when you look at it, it is fairly even. The texture of her dress seems quite rough and somewhat silky with the parts of her dress that are around wrist. Her skin is very soft and pale looking like a porcelain doll. It reminds me of a baby doll or an American girl doll that I received when I was younger. Her hair is quite puffy up top and almost reminds me of a wig with curls showing at the bottom of it and onto her chest. I do notice that it seems as there is low relief going on because the figure is almost on the same plane as the background. The lady is sitting still and not moving around so there is no dynamic motion being shown. The lady’s left arm which is towards our right side looks like it is overlapping. Her arm is blending in with the background. The artist does a great job using soft edged lines that are softer than a hard-edged line

The piece of Art, Smiling Girl, a Courtesan Holding an Obscene Image, painted by Gerrit van Honthorst in 1625 can be seen at the Saint Louis Art Museum. I was initially drawn to this image from across the gallery mostly due to the subject’s bright red dress with gold sleeves, it was one of the brightest colored images in the gallery. It is about three feet tall and two feet wide, it is an oil on canvas painting. As I approached the image, I was still intrigued as the image she is holding is of a naked man facing away, the subject in the painting seems to get enjoyment from this. To me this piece of art makes me curious, I want to know who this woman was and why she is holding that image. The artist seems to be communicating the importance of…

The pose of the subject just oozes professionality. She has great posture, and holds herself with a stance of authority. Though she is facing slightly to the left. She appears as a very formal lady. The subject has a neutral expression, though she is slightly frowning. Her gaze at first glance is hard and looks straight at the painter, but as you continue to look, you see the softness in her eyes. The colour is exaggerated in the face. Even though her face is more colourful than real life, the shades of colours…

This painting is of a young woman that dates around ca. 110-120. The hairstyle this woman wears allowed those who discovered it to add an approximate date to the painting. Her hair is resting on top of her head in a bun secured by a pin of pears and a chain of gold. The rest of her body is also adorned with…

One is also drawn to the folds and creases of what looks to be a velvet dress. The eye stops at the hands of the woman and notices her rings and the contrasting nature of her pale white skin to her dark clothes. Brush strokes throughout the painting are minimally seen, creating a very smooth looking painting. The palette used is predominately dark, the darkest parts of the painting would be her dress, eyes, and hair. They contrast greatly with the lightest parts of the painting, her face, hands, and collar.…

The painting portrays a woman in a very bright and sheer dress sitting on a bench. In the background there is polished wood furniture as well as sheer curtains with a hint of light escaping from the window sil. Behind Cecile is mostly an emptiness as if to make her stand out even more so in the foreground. My first impression was that the dress looks expensive. I immediately states scanning aesthetically scanning the dress because it stood out so much more than anything else on the canvas.…

It is also has a hint idealism in it. When looking at her face you can’t see any sort of blemishes or wrinkles. It basically looks like the perfect person. This may be intentional or it could be a part of the model. The statue is cast in bronze and was created with a mold of a real person.…

It was entitled The Account Keeper, and it was done in 1656 by Nicolaes Maes. The painting shows an older women bent over a pile of books with her head resting on her left hand as if she is fighting sleep. There are ceramic bowls, ink bottles, baskets, key chains lying around on shelves and desks; the detail and thought that was put into this painting was quite impressive to me. There are obvious, structured parallel lines throughout the painting and the colors are mainly muted. A shaft of light is angled across the painting as if it is coming through a window, highlighting the woman and her work but casting the corners into shadow. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the work is the large map on the wall. Cartographers often study maps in old paintings such as this one to understand the 17th century’s idea of how world looked. It is often easier to find maps in artwork than actual maps because maps were not necessarily considered valuable or worth preserving at the…

This woman wore a thin, elegant looking type of dress, thin sandals, and her crown. Her dress was painstakingly portrayed through creases and drapes along her whole body. Particularly, the creases at the center of the dress shows a bow-like design leading to ruffles going on the side of her body. The ruffles toward the end of the dress are overlapping on top of each other, casting more shadows. These creases deliberately cast shadows that gives the sculpture a more dimensional showcase.…
