Sophocles’ age old play Antigone is about a young girl who fights King Creon’s unjust law for the burial of her brother who was deemed a traitor to their town. With the act of civil disobedience both Antigone and Creon strive for their own justice but in the end meet their fate. A more modern way of civil disobedience would be the strategy that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used. The steps a person can use to change a law they find unjust are explained in his essay “The Power of Non-Violence” and “The Letter to Birmingham Jail”. Martin Luther King’s theory has four major steps: first finding an injustice exists, negotiation, self-purification and direct action. Although Antigone’s actions against Creon do not completely conform to Marin Luther…
On April 3rd, 1963, the Birmingham campaign began and people were protesting against racism and injustice. The non-violent campaign was coordinated by King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. However, King was roughly arrested with other main leaders of the campaign on April 12th for disobeying the rules of “no parading, demonstrating, boycotting, trespassing and picketing”. While jailed, King read a letter (“A call for unity”) written by eight white Alabama clergymen against King and his methods from the newspaper. In the letter, the clergymen stated that the campaign were "directed and led in part by outsiders," urging activists to use the courts if rights were being denied rather than to protest. The letter provoked King and “the Letter from Birmingham jail” was a written response to the white clergy men and to defend the strategy of non-violent protesting. Throughout the letter, King used many stylistic writing elements and effective emotional appealing to make people want to join his case.…
Mary and Joseph Tape were immigrants from China who now resided in the U.S. with their daughter Mamie. Despite Mamie’s clear citizenship, being born in the U.S., she was denied education at the local public school. School board members refused to place the children of Chinese immigrants within the public school system and any faculty who disobeyed this policy would be removed from their position. So, Mary and Joseph took it upon themselves to fight this prejudice with a letter addressed to the Board of Education as well as the current school superintendent. The Tape’s letter eventually found its way to the Superior Court of San Francisco, who ruled that the prejudice taken up against Mamie Tape was, in fact, unconstitutional. Following the…
While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.…
In “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (King Jr., Martin Luther. Letter From Birmingham Jail: Why We Can't Wait.), Martin Luther King Jr. writes back to the clergy on his actions and his demand for change and negotiation from a cell in Birmingham jail. In his letter, King explains the direct action in the Negro community is a demand for civil change, how he is disappointed in the blind eye in the white community, and how change is gained through love.…
On April 12, 1963, eight white clergymen from Alabama wrote to the citizens of this state to urge them to stop the demonstrations and protests that were occurring during the civil rights movement. The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. who many consider the leader of the Civil Rights Movement wrote his own letter in response. On April 16, 1963 he wrote the letter that is now known to all as the “Letter From Birmingham Jail.” This letter was directed towards the clergyman and basically all Christian people, I believe it is safe to say that this letter would be considered hostile to many in the Christian community during the time it was written.…
People often reflect on their past and look back at the times they regret. Most often people tend to regret experiences that caused him or her strife. However, others tend to look at these types of experiences and claim that they were a necessary part of their lives in order for them make sense of life. Antigone, from Sophocles’ Antigone, and Martin Luther King Jr and his “Letter From a Birmingham Jail”, engage in civil disobedience where both fight the laws of the land in order to follow a higher good with no regret. However, both do such in specific ways that ultimately differ from one another: Dr. King believes civil disobedience is a necessary moral obligation to defy unjust laws while Antigone believes it is necessary in order to please…

Hayden’s poem “Those Winter Sundays” is about a man lacking appreciation for the hard work and dedication that he does on a day to day basis for his job, but his child loves and appreciates him for all of the hard work that he does. The poem was from a child’s point of view and the theme of Those Winter Sundays is created through the stream of consciousness, conflicts, symbolism, and a flat/ static relationship of the poem. The father rises early on Sundays after a dense week of work, it seems as though no one appreciates him. Considering that the father work all the time the father might not show that he cares because he is not emotionally intact. However, getting up early to attend work shows that he cares because he is doing what he has to do to take care of the house. “Sundays to my father got up early. No one ever thanked him” (line1 & 5). This line represents a loving child who watches their father despises on getting up every Sunday to go to work and never receives a thank you for all of the hard work that he has done.…
On April 16, 1963, from the jail in Birmingham, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote a letter to the eight leaders of the white Church of the South. They had attacked his civil rights work in a public statement released on April 12, 1963. To persuade his readers, King mainly uses three types of persuasion that are appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos. First, King appeals to his own reputation and wisdom. Second, he tries to arouse emotions or sympathy in the readers. Finally, he appeals to logic, supported with evidence and citations from influential thinkers. He generates strong emotional appeals that are powerful at influencing what people think and believe. King establishes ethos by reaching different audiences based on his character. He also uses inartistic and artistic appeals at his attempt to persuade his readers in his “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”…
Martin Luther King Jr.’s thesis in Letter from a Birmingham Jail states why he is in Birmingham. Though he is not from there, he is there because of the many injustices done by the white people towards the black community. Dr. King states that, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”, so he is there to help his brothers and sisters stand together. MLK uses appeals to pathos and logos, and historical references, as well as many other techniques in his letter to the clergymen that criticize him.…
Haydn composed his Op. 74 quartets in the later years of his life between 1796 and 1797 and it was the last of his completed string quartets. The set of quartets were dedicated to the Hungarian Count Joseph Erdödy and were published in 1799. It was said that this selection of quartets was one of his “most ambitious chamber works” with his attempt of “emphasizing thematic continuity, seamlessly and continually passing motifs from one instrument to another” 1. The fourth of these quartets is nicknamed “Sunrise”. This is due to the exquisite rising theme heard in the first violin part at the beginning of the first movement from bar one to bar four as seen in Figure 1.…
Sonata form is the musical form is the form that has been most widely used then any other form. It really toke shape as a main form during the Classical period. It is usually used a first movement in a multi-movement piece and is commonly referred as Sonata-Allegro form.
