A Journey through Contemplation In the poem, “A Summer’s Evening Meditation”, Anna Barbuald uses rich imagery to depict a unique journey across the universe through the use of contemplation, the desire to know and questions that sparks the speaker’s curiosity. The desire that we as humans have to know is the aspect of what this poem highlights. Barbuald allows the speaker to contemplate through the creation of God to find that inner peace and strengthen her relationship with the divine. The speaker first contemplates, then asks questions and later on she wants to know new knowledge to surpass the old knowledge she already knows. It is a never ending cycle of knowledge for us as human beings. We are always in state of “learning” and want to know more. Of course it’s fine to ask many questions about the creation, life and who God is because we want to know our purpose here in life and why we were created. Barbuald’s attempt to create this rich imagery is to allow her readers to think deeply on how they go about their day and see if they ever contemplated like this before. She created this agency to re-invent the use of contemplation and ponder the majestic wonders of God’s creation. Many people take advantage of contemplation and pondering because they don’t have time for it or they are scared that their mind would lead them to something that they will regret even thinking about. Little do we know that contemplation is good for the soul and sometimes we as humans need a break from this hectic world that we live in.
