Analysis Of All Summer In A Day By Ray Bradbury

The short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, takes place on the planet Venus-where it is always raining and the sun only comes out every seven years. Most of the children that live there cannot remember the sun, although Margot can. She had recently moved to Venus from Earth and remembers every detail about it, like the beauty of it and the many wonders it brings. However, Margot’s classmates are resentful of her considering she can remember something that they can only dream about. The lesson that is hinted at throughout the story is that when someone is envious or jealous of another they can do and say many things they are not proud of. Around the time the sun was about to appear one of Margot’s classmates William said, "Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!” and with that, “They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door.” They had just taken away the one thing she wanted most, to see the sun. However once the rain started up again and the sun slowly faded they remembered how Margot was still trapped in the closet. Now they could see that their jealousy had made them do things they were ashamed of. Overall jealousy was a topic reiterated in many instances throughout the story. Including the end, when they began to fell sympathy for Margot after realizing the pain she was going through without the sun. As they stood there just looking at the closet they would have to live with the regret of doing something truly awful that has caused pain to another.
