Firstly, we are going to talk about ‘Who should you recruit and how do you persuade them to join?’.
Before joining, you needed to be recommended by a soldier in the army and you had to be very very fit. You had to be at least 20 years old, you couldn’t leave until 25 years were over and finally after retirement, soldiers are given money …show more content…
Large numbers of men which were divided into cohorts consisting of 480 men. (there were 10 of these from time to time). Then divided again into centuries which would be lead by a centurion. (there 6 centuries with about 80 in a century). Then they would split into 10 groups of 8 men who shared a tent. The legion also contained specialists such as engineers, surveyors, doctors, vets, stonemasons, craftsmen, and even torturers and executioners! Their total fighting strength was 5400 men. All of this organisation was called “Legionary Organisation” and the Roman Legionnaire or General would do this. And since the men were living with other men they don’t know, they needed to adapt to each other co-operate. They helped each other with everything.
“It’s better together than being alone”
They have to march 20 miles each day and build a fort. The fort was their complex where they will eat, train, fight etc.. But everything came at a price, they have to pay for their everything (funeral, food, home etc.). And once the you decide when to move they have to take down the fort and march another 20 miles and repeat the process.
Training and Tactics:
The Romans were famous for their barbaric and strong tactics. The early Roman army was modelled on the Greeks. They used the formation called the “Phalanx”. However, as they advanced, they found more tactics to use.

Do a drill once a day, twice if he was a recruit.
Learn to build camps, swim, sling stones, ride, mount and dismount from a horse fully armed with his shield and no stirrups!
Learn how to use a sword, spear and fight mock battles with weapons which had covered tips for safety.
And learnt the fighting techniques shown in section 3.
Not only do legionnaires have to train more than normal soldiers, they had to take care of an army!
Lastly our fourth topic is, “What equipment must your army have?”
An army is already big but the “Roman Army” was huge! Although everyone had to make their equipment, there were equipment that was provided. When fighting soldiers had huge shields which were curved to protect their whole body. On the shield there was a hemisphere which stuck out called a boss which can be used to punch the enemy’s head. They also needed weapons. Spears and swords were the 2 main weapons used in the army. Spears were used by throwing it at the enemy. The good point of having spears was that when they threw it, it would be bent as it may be crushed by armour or land so the enemy couldn’t use it as it was
