Analysis Of An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge
Many might think that short stories can only have one genre to them. In the story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” there are three types of genres which includes Adventure, War and Historical Fiction. This story is set during the Civil War in Alabama. In the beginning, a man is about to be executed by standing in a railroad bridge. During this occurrence, the state of mind of the man can be seen and imagined, and throughout we can see the story behind the man.

The first genre that may be in place in the story is Adventure. In this story there is a use of descriptive words that give the reader an insight in the atmosphere of the story. There are ideas that also give the reader a sense of awareness for the nature that is described in the

Peyton was hanged at Owl Creek Bridge because he was misled by the Union soldiers into burning a bridge that would have inhibited the northerner’s troops to get through. Peyton Farquhar, a rich, southern plantation owner, is tricked into sabotaging the Union Army. After failing to burn driftwood located near the bridge, Farquhar awaits his hanging on the bridge. Bierce’s background adds to the depth and realism of the short story, as he himself served with the Ninth Indiana Infantry Regiment, an experience that unmistakably carried into his short stories.
