In his introspective short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” author Ambrose Bierce embraces two different perspectives to demonstrate the fluidity of time. By showing an execution through the eyes of both the convict and an unnamed narrator, Bierce presents how perceptions of time may differ depending on situations. The story opens with a monotone, disinterested description of the conditions of the execution. Technical language and military jargon are used to present simple facts.     The short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce is a story divided into three parts. In the first part we meet a man about to be hung by the Union army in the time of the Civil War. He is being hung for an unknown reason other than opposing the Union army. In the second section we learn about the successful planter named Peyton Farquhar. Peyton wants to help the confederacy; he is unable to join the Confederate Army. A Union spy comes and tells him of a way he can sabotage the Union army. In the third section Peyton’s rope breaks and he makes an escape from the Union soldiers. He makes it back home after walking all night to find his wife and when they embrace we find that Peyton is dead swinging over the creek.     Abstract The traditional analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method can only compare a very limited number of decision alternatives, which is usually not more than 15. When there are hundreds or thousands of alternatives to be compared, the pairwise comparison manner provided by the traditional AHP is obviously infeasible. In this paper we propose an integrated AHP–DEA methodology to evaluate bridge risks of hundreds or thousands of bridge structures, based on which the maintenance priorities of the bridge structures can be decided. The proposed AHP–DEA methodology uses the AHP to determine the weights of criteria, linguistic terms such as High, Medium, Low and None to assess bridge risks under each criterion, the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method to determine the values of the linguistic terms, and the simple additive weighting (SAW) method to aggregate bridge risks under different criteria into an overall risk score for each bridge structure. In this short story, the narrator tells of a man named Peyton Farquhar about to be hanged for attempting to interfere with a railroad during the Civil War. Luckily, as he falls the rope snaps and he falls into the water below with the noose and cord still around his neck and wrist.
