Mise-en-scene Analysis of Apocalypse Now The movie Apocalypse Now was written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979. It is an American film about the Vietnam conflict. The protagonist is U.S. Army special operations officer Captain Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen) who has been assigned to assassinate a presumably insane and AWOL Special Forces Colonel Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando). The film takes us through the heart of North Vietnam along the Nung River where Captain Willard and his escorts have a run in with a tiger, watch a USO show, and encounter, and mistakenly destroy a sampan. They eventually find Col Kurtz and become his captives. Eventually Kurtz gives Willard the freedom to move around the compound and Willard finally is able to kill Kurtz with a machete (Movieclips.com). The film is directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who adapted it from a 1900’s novella Heart of Darkness. The director in a film is often that of a foreman, taking the screenwriter’s story and translating it so that the crew and the actors can carry it out. While the director is not the only person involved in making a movie, he or she is the most crucial and usually receives the most credit, or the most blame (Guild). The production designer is the visual artist and storyteller of a movie. They work primarily with the director to create the overall feel and atmosphere that move the story by using stage sets, locations and backgrounds. They also collaborate with the visual effects team, cinematographer, and producers regularly. The production designer for Apocalypse Now is Dean Tavovaris (Guild). Angelo Graham is the Art Director for the film. His function is to follow through on the vision for production that the Production Designer and the Director have. He does this by coordinating the efforts of many departments including the Art Department, Construction, Set Dressing,

The film Charlie’s Angels produced and released in the year 2000. The artists of this film are; McG Director, J. Micheal Riva Production Designer, and Art Director however in this film there is no one under that name but there is a Costume Designer, which is the same thing. The Costume designer is Joseph G. Aulisi. These three people are very important to the overall turn out of the film. However this does not mean that these three by themselves can produce an entire film, that would be crazy, no there are many others giving a helping hand, but for this paper we are going to just discuss the main three.…

The Vietnam War lasted from November of 1955 to April of 1975. Remembered as one of the most deadly and most costly wars in American history. Costing the United States about $173 billion, and resulting in more than 58 thousand American casualties alone. With this damage stated, countless others suffered from disabling injuries and mental instabilities even after returning home. Both The Deer Hunter (1978 Michael Cimino) and Apocalypse Now (1979 Francis Ford Coppola) can be used to provide and insight into the effects of the war on the soldiers that fought in the war, but also to those who knew the soldiers and remained in the United States during the war.…

Apocalypse Now is based on Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness which is not about Vietnam. Heart of Darkness was written in 1902 and is about a journey up the Congo River into the heart of darkest Africa to find a power-crazed white trader named Kurtz. It is conceivable that an African tribe may have treated Kurtz as a god in the early days of colonization but I find it hard to believe the Montagnard tribesmen of Cambodia would have done so in the Vietnam War. And I don't really believe that in the Vietnam War soldiers were surfing while battles raged around them.…

The five horsemen of apocalypse are not beings that were created or made. They simply are. They never came from a single source, but instead were seemingly ripped from reality itself and brought into existence. They are the ones dealt with bringing upon the end when the time comes, and then rebuilding once the deed has been done. Once the four first horsemen have taken their toll, it is left up to the fifth horsemen to rebuild the realms. They are Death, Pestilence, Conquest, War, and Providence.…

The first time Captain Benjamin L. Willard is introduced in the film, he is shown as being high on drugs, drunk and in very bad shape. His face is filmed up side down, everything being reversed and wrong. The fan spinning around in the ceiling sounds like a helicopter from the war and he practices martial arts almost like he is fighting an imaginary enemy. This instantly gives the feeling that Willard is still mentally in the war – without really being there. Willard is throughout the film a very passive figure. He focuses on his mission and do not have an interest in anything else than finding colonel Kurtz. Through his travel, which is the majority of the film, Willard keeps to him self most of the time, reading and…
