Analysis Of Bengali Qawwali
Poets, compositions and performance
A Bengali qawwali team generally comprise of three to five persons. The lead singer plays the harmonium. Since the Bengali qawwali groups have less number of artists, clapping is replaced by tambourine or a small pair of cymbal. The other instruments used in Bengali qawwali are mainly Tabla, Dholak and sometimes Bulbul Tarang. The separate sitting arrangement for men and women corresponds to the traditional environment of any Islamic gathering including qawwali.
Naser has been performing Bengali qawwali for last thirty-five years. He is a quiet popular singer among the listeners of Bangla qawwali. A number of his Bengali qawwali albums, namely ‘Pir Na Khoda’, ’Belayeter Badshah Maola Ali’ and ‘Zinda

They are called ‘aam’ and 'khas’. The ‘aam’ concerts begin with with 'hamd’ composed in Urdu or Hindi, whereas khas concerts start with 'naat’ followed by ‘qaul’ or ‘Maula Ali’r Shaan’ mainly composed in Bengali. In his opinion, a cheap and popular form of romantic duet Qawwali is performed in aam concerts, while in Khas concerts, Qawwali is performed in its ‘pure’ form in front of the true admirers of music at the Sufi Dargahs. Khokon Qawwal explained:
“Actually, there are many types of songs popularly known as qawwali. For an example, Chhed (the popular romantic duet songs), songs used in cinemas and the songs performed in the Dargahs, all of them are called qawwali. There are audience for all types of songs.”
In a khas concert, where I was also present, Naser Jhankar began his performance with a hamd composed in Bengali. Although, the melody of the song was a cheap imitation of ‘Allah Hu’, a qawwali popularized by legendary Pakistani qawwal late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the lyric is not directly translated from the original. The song is as

Apart from these popular tunes, the Bengali qawwals also incorporate traditional Bengali themes and tunes of Baul and Bhatiyali music. I was invited in a qawwali gathering on the celebration of urs in the Dargah of Mastan Shah Baba. The qawwals performed mostly Urdu songs. Only song in Bengali was performed by Khokon Qawwal. The song starts with a nagma (musical prelude in qawwali) followed by a short verse without rhythm. The theme of the song is very common in Indo-Persian as well as Bengali devotional

The piece “Devi Niye Tunai” is in kriti genre. The kriti genre is made of three major parts: Pallavi, Anupallavi, and Charanam. There are usually sections that are played before and after these three parts that make a piece that is in kriti genre sound complete, so we can say the kriti section of the piece is in the kriti genre (the whole piece). There is a section that is played before these three sections, and it is called alapana. Alapana does not have rhythm; in other words, it has free rhythm. In the alapana section of Devi Niye Tunai the singer is improvising in the Keeravani raga. She does so in order to warm up, become familiar and explore the notes in the the raga, and make herself ready for the main section of the piece which is the kriti. The alapana section can go on for even half an hour, but in the piece “Dive Niye Tunai” the singer improvises just for a few seconds.…

The first piece composed by Muhammad ‘Abd al-Wahhab and contains instruments like the piccolo, three large tiran which are frame drums, quanun, six violins, cell, bass, piano, and the Cairo Opera choir. This piece is an example of an Egyptian strophic song with refrains called the ughniyah. It combines traditional instruments from Arab and Western parts of the world. The beginning of the piece starts with an instrumental introduction and the texture is homophonic for its very similar or exact rhythm but slightly different melodies. We first hear the frame drums, which are accenting beat 1,3,5, and 7 in an…

After presenting to the audience their first piece the choir moved on to sing “Hakuna Mungu Kama Wewe”. This is a sacred east African worship song that is written to be sung Acapella with SAB parts. The non-syncopated piece in the major mode gave a joyful feeling to the audience with its quick pace. Unlike their first piece the choirs voice seemed like one big sound without any breaks, they were in complete unison.…

There are several different types of traditional Shona musics, including mbira, singing, and drumming. Very often, this music is accompanied by dancing and participation by the audience.[2] In Shona music, there is little distinction between the performer and the audience; both are actively involved in the music making, and both are important in the religious ceremonies where Shona Music is often heard.[3] In mbira music, “the performer of the kushaura (lead mbira part) often acts also as the lead vocalist, selecting a known melody or mbira pattern to accompany selected lyrics, usually a phrase or a few lines of text which are then commented upon via improvisation. The performer of the kutsinira (second mbira part) plays a pattern which interlocks with the kushaura in a way that creates the repeated notes which identify mbira music. The kutsinira part is often the same part as the kushaura, but played a half a beat later. The mbira players are accompanied by another less active singer who plays the hosho (a rattle) and responds to the improvised lyrics of the singer, and most importantly embellishes and complements the lead vocal melody.”[4]…

On Friday February 10, 2017, I attended the astounding North Indian Drum Tabla Concert at University of California, Riverside in the Arts Building. The venue wasn’t big or small, but it has a roomy stage with one hundred and fifty seats. The setup consisted of three carpets with three tablas, which are membranophones that have one big drum and one small drum, one harmonium, which is a chordophone that is a tiny organ, and many microphones on the stage. The ensemble included Abhiman Kaushal, director of UCR South Asian Ensemble, on lead tabla soloist, Rupesh Kotecha on harmonium, Vignesh Manohar on vocals, Miles Shrewsbery on tabla, and a UCR freshman also on tabla. The ensemble collectively performed a few compositions that were pleasant to listen to.…

The musical tradition of Northern Indian Hindustani music is built on different conceptions of musical components than our traditional Western music. Notation of this music is a relatively new endeavor, starting in the 1900’s. Previously the music culture was a tradition passed down orally from a guru or a shishya. The notation of the music today is known a relatively non-standardized process with more emphasis on interval relations than on actual pitches. For example there is no concept of a “440 A” within traditional Hindustani music, rather, they rely on thaats.…

The renowned scholar, Seyyed Hossein Nasr quotes a man he deeply admires, Yehudi Menuhin, who said, “Sufi music is like ladder that connects the soul to Allah.” This ultimately shows the importance that music has on Sufism. In addition, Nasr also states that there must be conditions set for each particular Sufi order to participate in the spiritual concert, or sama’. This word serves as the paramount idea relating to Sufi ideals such as love and longing for Allah and is accredited to the famous Sufi poet, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī. Spiritual music is universal; it plays a huge role…
