According to Brian Witte, the cause behind this unpopularity is because of the myths told about taking a year between your senior year of high school and freshman year of college. The first myth of taking a gap year is that “a gap year is like a vacation” (Witte). Many students decide to work to either make some extra money or put the money earned into their college tuition. Some students volunteer for more experience towards their major or what they plan on doing in life. Although every student chooses a different path, “each of these options involves effort” (Witte). Another popular myth is
that the gap year could potentially harm your chances of getting into your desired school. Witte believes that your admission chances are solely based off of what you spend your gap year doing. A 12-month leave in education is a red flag for college admissions. But as long as you used the year wisely and demonstrate what you learned and how much you grew there should be no problem with getting into your admired school. That being said, a gap year is what you make of it. What you do in the year could potentially affect your future.
