Analysis Of Cat's Cradle By Kurt Vonnegut
In the book “Cat’s Cradle” by Kurt Vonnegut a central piece of the novel's plot is the substance ice-9. Ice-9 is described as being designed for marines it would solidify mud, thus making it easier to walk through. It does this wondrously but also makes all water in contact with original mud( water in mud) permanently frozen. As humans are made up of mostly water if we come in contact with this substance we freeze. If our dead bodies come in contact with any water it freezes. As you can see if this ice-9 was dropped into the ocean it would essentially freeze all of our water supply thus leaving us in some type of mega drought. This ice-9 is an allusion to a nuclear bomb. As a nuclear bomb has the ability to completely wipe us out of existence
so does ice-9. One can easily see Vonnegut’s odium to war and WMD’s that have the ability to completely erase all existence within a few square miles.
