This standard has three key elements that go along with it. They include, knowing and understanding young children’s characteristics and needs, the multiple influences on learning, and using developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments. The first key element was portrayed at the daycare. The teachers knew the children’s characteristics and needs. For example, some of the children did not like to drink chocolate milk. As an educator someday I plan to do what the educators did at the daycare. I want to meet the standard of promoting child development and learning. I will teach the children, their ABC’s and help them count. I want my children to leave preschool knowing skills that will help them succeed in kindergarten. I will understand each and every child’s needs and characteristics, so I am able to teach them. For example, I will know which children do not like to read, and I am going to encourage them to read a book. I may say, “Hey Ryan why don’t you try this book? It looks very interesting.” As a teacher, I desire to use my developmental knowledge to help my classroom succeed. For instance, I will know which children are capable of participating in an activity alone based on their development. If I know Kayla is struggling with using scissors, while the others are not, I will help Kayla one on one so she does not end up having an accident occur. As a teacher in the near future, I will put forth my best effort to meet the requirements of NAEYC standard one and its
