The line work gives emphasis to their clothing, how their body language is supposed to be portrayed, and their movement, the woman and man pointing at Peter, Peter trying to explain his cause. The different variety of movements is what helps to tell the story. The space between the characters helps explain the secrecy between the woman and the guard, the distance between her and Peter is because she is blaming him of being a believer in Christ. His choice of color in this piece is great; he chose dark colors for the background, shading and some color for the guard and the woman and lighter colors on Peter. His face is the most prominent in the picture, emphasizing his features and personality more, which means the piece is most likely about him. This painting symbolizes more than this woman just blaming Peter for what he believes it, it also represents a time in life when things weren’t as acceptable as they were today, it shows a brave man standing up for everything he believes in, and that’s what makes this piece so powerful. Even though Van Gogh made beautiful works of art like the one shown above, Undergrowth with Two Figures, the thoughts that he harvested drove him completely insane. In reality his art was his good side, his only solitude. Undergrowth with Two Figures was created in 1890 the same year that Van Gogh took his own life. This painting was one of the many he did before he died, however he told his brother the meaning of the painting to him. The painting displays tons of space in between trees, which appear to be proportional, making everything feel really three-dimensional. The trees forms range from big to small, however they are all balanced, in height, ascending way beyond the size of the oil-based canvas (19 ½ x 39 ¼ in.). The color in this piece was especially important, even the background appears to be dark behind the trees, but he chose to surround, the two companions, in white and yellow flowers, and luscious greenery.
