Analysis Of Daniel Orozco's Orientation
As many know, an orientation is a long, extenuating process that is used in order to provide vital information, whether it pertain to a job or even school. The information is drilled into each individual’s brain by repetition of words and even by words typed on a piece of paper. In Daniel Orozco’s “Orientation,” the reader can see that this isn’t just any normal orientation being given, it was more like an in-depth view into each employee’s life whether it pertained to the office or their personal life. With this particular short story, there is proof that this is a stereotypical view on an orientation, but with his use of repetition, humorous words, and lack of dialogue between characters, he truly captures the essence of what orientation

The article Organizational Theory by Adrianna Kezar (2011) looks at one of the most important frameworks for student affairs professional’s organizational theory, which is essential in understanding their roles within the student affairs realm. One thing that stood out to me was how Kezar (2011) didn’t just simply outline four of the major organizational theories but provided a theory to practice example. Kezar (2011) decided to use the initiative of building learning communities on campus because it is a task that many campuses today are trying to accomplish. I also found the section on the dark side of organizations to be very interesting because I feel in order to be successful with change you need to not hide the less attractive aspects of organizations. Kezar (2011) mentioned how Morgan (1997) pointed out that organizations don’t have things such as oppression as their goals but instead “these are the unintended consequences of trying to meet such objectives as increased profits or surviving in hard times” (p.238). But successful leaders on campuses across the U.S. will use skills outlined in the four frames to start a dialogue about solutions to these problems that are often swept under the rug. Something that I really connected with in tis reading was when Kezar (2011) was describing the…

"Orientation" is written by Daniel Orozco. Daniel Orozco was born in San Francisco in 1957, he still lives in San Francisco and teaches creative writing at Stanford University. "Orientation" was published in The Seattle Review in 1994. "Orientation" starts in medias res, and a person, who could either be female or male, so I'll go with male, is shown around at his new job. He is going to work in an office where they sit in small cubicles. The guy who is showing him around, tells him about different persons and how things work around the office. They have some very special rules, and all the other persons we hear about working at the office has some special personalities. But as long as it doesn't interfere with the peoples working pace, it is all right. They also have a very good health insurance, so if they family gets in an accident they don't have to pay a dime, and therefore not worry, and can keep on working. One of the persons we meet in the text is Barry Hacker. He steals food in the refrigerator, as an outlet for his grief for the loss of his wife and unborn child. Barry Hacker talked with another person called Anika Bloom, and she told him how his wife would die. He has not been himself ever since she died, and she is haunting him and the office. She has been seen in the monitors walking around the office, and has left messages on the voicemail, where you can hear her voice and a baby. By stealing food I think Barry Hacker is trying to get attention from the other people in the office, but they are all really just staying to themselves, and doesn't really mingle with each other. They are just putting a little extra in their lunch for him, but they don't help him otherwise. There is also a big love drama going on in the office."Amanda Pierce, who tolerates Russell Nash, is in love with Albert Bosch, whose office…

Organizational Behavior Analysis According to the text, organizational behavior is “the investigation of the behavioral factors that affect modern organizations and their management at the individual, group, and organization-wide levels” (Baack, 2012). In order to effectively analyze the organizational behavior of the, it is essential to understand its components. This will be achieved by critiquing the observable actions and attitudes of the individuals within the organization, explaining how groups interact with each other, and how well the organization functions. The components that influence the behavior of an organization are the type of culture, mode of communication, nature of authority, motivational techniques, and emotional intelligence. These components may affect in a positive or negative manner. By definition, organizational culture is “a set of shared meanings and values held by a set of members in an organization that distinguishes the organization from other organizations and determines how it perceives and reacts to the larger environment” (Baack, 2012). Of the following organizational culture types: pluralism, dualism, and salad bowl, pluralism best describes the organizational culture that is present in . By definition, cultural pluralism is “a condition in which minority groups participate fully in the dominant society, yet maintain their cultural differences” (Dictionary, 2013). Throughout the Department of Navy (DON), this has become even more profound with the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. The DON is made up a multitude of people with an extremely diverse background. When diversified group of people are brought together, they inevitable bring personalities and attitudes.…

Movies often depict a glimpse into the inner workings of organizations which are complex and fascinating entities that consist of a group of people, who work together. Analyzing how the characters, as individuals and groups, interact with one another allows for an understanding of “how people think, feel and act” within an organization, also referred to as the study of organizational behaviour. The movie The Devil Wears Prada, set at Runway fashion magazine in New York City, is the story of Andrea "Andy" Sachs, an aspiring journalist who gets the job that “a million girls would kill for”. She is hired as the second assistant to Miranda Priestly, the powerful and ruthless executive of the magazine. The job is her stepping stone into the world of publishing and if she lasts a year in the often unreasonably demanding position, it will open up the realms to the journalistic position she desires. Andrea works in collaboration with the first assistant, Emily Charlton, to quickly learn Miranda’s behaviours and preferences, so that she can try to meet expectations. This includes being at Miranda’s beck and call 24/7 and completing nearly impossible tasks with constant trepidation of the editor’s wrath. Along the way, Andrea changes her attitude and behaviour along with her simple and plain style in order to gain acceptance, and adapt to the organization. In this paper, we will examine the organizational behaviour concepts of perception, impression management, and organizational commitment behaviours as they apply to Andrea, Miranda and Emily at Runway fashion magazine.…

    The Organization Kid

Have you ever heard of the Organization Man by William H. Whyte (1956)? The term was coined in the ’50s to describe the grey-suited man behind the cubicle living in middle-class suburbia, who did his job then went home and had dinner with his wife and two children, the man who was like millions of other men in America: dull, a conformist and very respectful of authority. Whyte wanted to understand people who not only worked for “The Organization,” but also “belonged” to it. What do you anticipate might be the characteristics of an organization kid? For the adult, the organization is the place of work, the corporation: what might be the organization for a kid? In David Brooks’ article “The Organization Kid,” he describes what he feels are the deep goals of the modern Princeton student. Brooks believes that today’s students do not want to challenge authority, but rather follow the set norms of society. He feels that the students have been molded by their parents to act and dress in a certain manner. His article also concentrates on the idea that students go to college not to gain higher learning, but to get a good job and make money. The students are being trained to be “The Organization Kid.” The Organization Kid is a generation of students who are extraordinarily bright, morally earnest and incredibly industrious.…
