The two sculptures I chose were The Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet and Monumental Figure. The Sakhmet statue is from the New Kingdom era, 18th Dynasty. Dated all the way back to ca. 1390-1352 B.C. in Egypt. It is made out of granodiorite. There are two identical at the museum in New York. The Monumental Figure is from the 9th century. It was found in Mexico, it is from the Mayan culture. The statue is classified as a stone-sculpture. You can find the Monumental figure in gallery 358 and the Goddess Sakhmet you can find in gallery 135 at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.…

Mr. Lehrman uses almost exclusively logos in his journal article; however, there is a little bit of egos as well. The author does not use pathos for a few reasons, firstly he is trying to write a persuasive and educational article and the appeals of logos and egos are better fitted for that. Secondly, the subject that he is writing about is relatively numerical and scientific which also does not lend itself to pathos overly well. The author uses a lot of examples from utility companies that have switched over to mandatory demand charges which would go under logos. Furthermore, he uses his own authority on the situation which is egos.…
By putting democratic beliefs into anecdotal form, it is easier for Republicans to understand the reasoning of the Democrats, without forcing the ideas upon them. During this anecdote, Obama uses anaphora to give power and urgency to his parents’ situation by beginning each of the sentence with “they”, like when he states, “They imagined --They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren’t rich, because in a generous America you don’t have to be rich to achieve your potential,” (1). He uses antanagoge to show the positivity and hope that only America’s policies could give his family. By including the anecdote of his family’s “rag to riches” story, he utilizes enargeia creates imagery to which the listener can grasp onto. Utilizing sententia, Obama ties the idea of social mobility from his anecdote to the principle of equality in the Declaration of Independence, when he states, “Our pride is based on a very simple premise... ‘among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”(1). Social mobility is an American principle that anyone can relate to because it offers hope for the future. Hope is what allowed America to become what it is…
I grew up on a ship. Not a cruise ship, and not a houseboat or a yacht; the MV Logos II was a converted car ferry that sold books and did aid work around the world. My family moved aboard for four years when I was ten. It’s a singular experience; very few people can say they spent four years living on a ship, particularly from the ages of ten to fourteen. Those four years have been incredibly influential on me as a person and for years I’ve toyed with the idea of translating it into some written form. I am, after all, a writer. Much of my time here at Gallatin has been spent refining my understanding of story and the intricacies of plot. Writing a story about growing up on a ship would be the next logical step.…
Her objective in this particular writing is to show how important government assistance programs are too many Americans. She made it very clear in her writing, that although America is the richest nation in the world, many Americans still suffer from or is on the verge of starvation. She also made it very clear that it is important to fight for these programs whenever necessary because although these programs have proven to be helpful to the American people, there are some people out there who fill they are a waste of government spending. It is easy to draw this conclusion because Edelman had to fight back at several groups in the past who tried to defund state and government programs. She also attempted to persuade readers to see her point-of-view by elaborated on the struggles she encountered and overcame in the past. In addition, she had to fight for more programs that would help less-fortunate American on a…
Johnson C. Montgomery, the author of The Island of Plenty, uses many figures of speech in the article to support his opinion. Lots of different rhetorical devices are used such as comparison and repetition.…
She essentially makes on or two “I say” claims through the entire passage and backs it up with “They say” generally which proves to be functional. This formula seems to work because shows she didn’t just start making things up without any evidence. She is going out there and finding people who have gone through the same experience that she is trying to bring to our…

For example, the sentence, “Colonists brought slavery with them to North America, along with smallpox and Norway rats” influences the reader’s view of the topic by providing an example of how “many of the worst abuses have been carried out by ‘people who root themselves in ideas rather than places.’” The author also demonstrates the element of rhetoric in a similar manner, by creating a vivid mental image through of descriptive words and phrases such as “If we fish out a stream or wear out a field, or if the smoke from a neighbor’s chimney begins to crowd the sky, why, off we go to a new stream, a fresh field, a clean sky.” Sanders utilizes the element of syntax by ordering his thoughts in a clear and methodical way. This is demonstrated through his use of transitional words, like “so”, “but”, and “when”, his clear structure of an introduction, two body or example paragraphs, and a conclusion, and his…
To begin with, Graff uses many forms of logic to persuade the reader into his point of view. By employing logos into his writing he states logical arguments of how many students are street smart or interested in other things. Graff guides the reader into the realization that if a student is interested in a subject, it is only logical that when the subject is incorporated into the learning material then the student will comprehend the concept more easily. Graff states that “they would be more prone to take on intellectual identities if we encourage them to do so at first on subjects that interest them rather then ones that interest us” (Graff 199).…
Lamkin uses logos, or appeal to logic, by using effective and valid evidence, such as statistics and observations of credible source. By doing this Lamkin establishes the problem, and gives credibility toward an effective essay. On the other hand he creates balance by using an opposing solution from a credible source. Lamkin states “34 percent of university’s undergraduates have used stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall as study aids” (640). By using this statistic he states there is a logical problem that legitimately needs a solution. Then Lamkin says “Wesleyan University amended its student’s code of conduct to recognize “misuse” of prescription drugs as a violation” (641). By representing this observation by the university Lamkin gives credibility toward his essay, and also gives give’s balance by giving an opposing argument. All and all by using logos Lamkin creates a convincing argument.…

The manner in which, Didion explains her personal story aids in the understanding of the concept of writing for an explanation. The use of the personal experience, causes an individual to understand the thinking process that contributes to the creation of Didion’s stories and why she writes. Imagination becomes a vital role in the process of writing, thus the use of rhetorical questions can often be seen throughout the essay. The author is able to create space and time for the characters within their story, causing the writer to develop a sense of god-hood. Just as Didion uses stories to enhance her explanation and purpose for writing, President Obama uses historical stories to emphasize prosperity and patriotism. In order to convince the audience that he is correct, Obama uses stories to intensify a sense of “listen to me, see it my way, change you minds”. Although the words may appear to have a negative connotation, Obama utilizes this sense to impose prosperity, as he states, “Sixty years ago, when Russia beat us into space…We didn't argue about the science, or shrink our research, and development budget. We built a program almost…
