Author Steven Johnson, of the article “Watching TV Makes You Smarter,” argues the evolution of modern television programming has intellectually challenged audiences, rather than stifling complex thoughts—and more, that audiences are craving a more cognitively demanding, complex plot line. Johnson uses multiple examples of drama type shows and even draws positive conclusions from many of the reality shows that are so popular now. He focuses in on a few key factors to take into account when considering the complexity and value of television—the “Sleeper Curve”, televised intelligence, and intentional viewer confusion.…
In the video, The Deadly Deception, is an all around made story on savage conduct in government kept up obvious examination. The piece records the forty year examination of untreated syphilis in around 400 African-American men from Macon County, Alabama which started in 1932. The use of parties with two survivors of the examination, Herman Shaw and Charles Pollard, and directors in the fields of examination, system, and social adaptabilities, close awesome film taken amidst the trial, results in a bona fide and startling outline of the abuse of human subjects in investigative examination.…
Richard Connell was America’s most renowned short story writer of the 1920s and arguably his greatest work was the 1924 classic The Most Dangerous Game. This short story starts out with Sanger Rainsford, a world renowned hunter, traveling to the Amazon to go big game hunting with his first mate Whitley. While voyaging on Rainsford’s yacht they pass an ominous island named “Ship Trap Island” and Rainsford falls overboard where he proceeds to swim to this island. Rainsford then finds his way through the island until he reaches a great castle owned by Cassock General named General Zaroff. Rainsford is greeted by a great giant named Ivan, who is Zaroff’s servant, and is taken inside because Zaroff welcomes…
Chris Hedges begins his essay with a reference from Greek mythology. He makes mention of the Greek god of retribution, Nemesis, who is responsible for punishing those who put themselves on the same level as god; normally by death. “She exacted divine punishment on arrogant mortals who believed they could defy the gods, turn themselves into objects of worship and build ruthless systems of power to control the world around them.” The name Nemesis in the Greek means “ to give what is due” Hedges then warns his readers that our Nemesis is fast approaching, due to our wrong doings in society, which he believes is heavily influenced by the media.…
Tatar shows that fairy tales are supposed to make a “childhood world of imagination” (307), when they also aim at adults for them to have an “adult world of reality” (307). Adults are always in fairy tales and are not made out to be the best characters in them. Orenstein relates to Tatar by showing us adults like to be very straight forward, on reality TV shows when there is sometimes even drama. Orenstein shows adults like to watch reality TV of adult like fairy tales such as the “The Bachelorette” (285) and “Race to the Alter” (285), these shows are like fairy tales because people are falling in love and living in a fantasy, while there may be mean adults on the show trying to ruin the love for some of the couples. On the reality TV shows that are popularly watched by adults, displays lots of “lies and manipulation” (285), making adults out to seem bad once again.…
In their movie The Secret, the filmmakers attempt to inform their viewers of a powerful concept in which they refer to as The Secret, or the Law of Attraction, and how to use it. They aim to convince everyone who watches the movie that the secret is real. They show many examples of people who have effectively used it. Throughout the movie, the rhetorical strategies ethos, pathos, and logos are used. First, they use the appeal to authority, which is ethos, to make their audience trust them. In the movie, Bob Proctor and Rev. Michael Beckwith have captions under them while they are talking that say what their profession is. As do all of the other people who speak in the movie, whether they are a philosopher or financial strategist. All of the…
Eschewing realism, romanticism, and rationality to create relentlessly unenlightening plays, which playwright said, "Art has nothing to do with clarity, does not dabble in the clear, and does not make clear?"…
L.M. Montgomery once said, “...we pay the price for everything we get or take in this world”. What he is trying to say is that we have to face the consequences for the choices we make. There is always a result from everything that happens, giving or taking, will result in something else. I agree with his philosophy, mainly because it speaks pure truth about how most things are run in the common society that we as human beings live in. Two pieces of literature that best support this quote are “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, and “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding.…

In a world full of propaganda and corruption , the skill of artifice is valued. In order to succeed in life you must please others, either by having the same opinions or even giving others a false sense of kindness and the willingness to care. Arguably, artifice can take you places and is a great skill to obtain, even though it may seem a little unsettling to some people. Artifice is high up in the list of skills that people should obtain for themselves.…
Herodotus once said “men are at the mercy of events and cannot control them.” In saying this Herodotus meant that men cannot control any situation, but that it is fate that determines what is to occur. Prince Edward from The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain and Macbeth from Macbeth by William Shakespeare prove this statement to be both true and false.…
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly", was once said by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. This is an accurate quote to live by and refer to daily since following your instincts is usually the best decision for yourself. It leads you to do exactly what you want to do, instead of anyone getting to your mindset. This quote can also be shown in literature-characters go through hardships within there own minds. But when a third party expresses their own opinion of the problem then the character becomes confused and eventually withdrawled from what they really want. Accordingly, two works of literature that best show how following your heart(mind) is the better decision would be Tennesse Williams play The Glass Minagerie and Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. However, Tom and John Proctor are both faced with making a decision-good or bad, with help or not, a decision must be made. Along with problems in real life these two characters had to go with their "gut" instinct, and in the end-it was the best decision possible.…
“The only worthwhile literature is that which makes you think about you own life.” This statement is valid for many reasons like, sometimes you can compare the story to your own life, it makes you think about what you said and done to other people, and the story can be a real eye opener and could possibly help you get your life back on track to the road of success. Two works of literature that support this quote are A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Spark and To Save a life by Jim and Rachel Britts.…

Success is to achieve something that we truly long for. “Sometimes failure is more beneficial than success.” Written by Darren Roberts. This is a very inspiring quote for all species of mankind. I agree rightfully with this quote as it states that even sometimes there are ups and downs, falls and disruptions in life, but those problems make us even stronger and prevent us from making the same mistake and make us more successful in life. Although, if losing things sometimes make us closer to something we want, we must make a go for it. As In Homers’, The Odyssey, and Nancy’s’, The House of The Scorpion, the main characters deal with personal loss and face many hardships, but finally reach to their own respected homes and families, safe and soundly.…
