He says things like “I learn faster than my brothers” and “I am taller than my brothers” and this gives him a small sense of being an individual, but it is bad to be different than your brothers. The book also foreshadows what is going to happen when the main character discovers electricity, with how long it took people to “discover” the candle, this discovery further leads him to be pushed away from the society and leave.

The main character, equality-2521 is 6 feet tall, which he explains is a sign of evil, and is 21 years old. Ever sense he was born he has been thinking of forbidden thoughts and he calls this a curse, in addition when he was in the house of students he found learning too easy for him, this also makes him evil. All this evidence points to equality-2521 having an individualist mindset, and in order to really live he had to escape the collectivist society that he lives in and discover the secrets the Unmentionable Times hold. When he grew up he wanted most of all to be made a scholar by the council of vocations, they are the ones who assign someone a job for life, but instead of being assigned to the house of scholars, he was assigned to the house of streetsweepers as punishment for being different. This job continued of for a few years, until one faithful day him and one of the other street sweepers came across an underground tunnel, he made his companion not say a word about it, and this was because this was a major law violation, but soon made the tunnel was made into his own hideout. This was one of the first times the main character separated himself from the collectivist society that he lives in and expressed his individualist mindset.
Although the finding of the tunnel was one of the first times he committed a major crime, it wasn’t the last. One day while equality-2521 was sweeping next to a field, he saw a woman by the name of liberty 5-3000. As soon as equalit-2521 saw liberty 5-3000 he could not stop thinking about her, this was against the rules though and meant that he cared for one person over anyone else.
